Being a rural guy all my life driving around with no street lights does not phase me in the least, also being a northern guy I am used to roads being covered in snow and ice a couple 5 months of the year at times..... The only real thing that I keep my an eye out l for is WILDLIFE!!!!!!!! We have moose around here as well and you dont want to hit one of those even in a full size truck or SUV, you have 800+ lbs of pissed off badly hurt critter come through the windscreen and join you in the cabin, its even worse if it happens in a lower vehicle...

Several years ago when I was in the process of moving out west, I had gone back to MI to get my e30 out of winter storage and run it to home in MT. it was 2ish am when I pulled out of Gillette WY on I90 west bound on a gorgeous late march night, about 48 min latter I was in Sheridan WY, never saw another car going either direction that night . I WAS HAULING ASS, never had an issue with following the road, just about min 40 I passed a HERD of antelope or at least what I think was antelope as whent wizzing by right near the edge of the right lane. I was running the center line to help me keep it between the fence posts. Last fall I was driving my FZJ home from PA from a job, running through N WI and MN at night during hunting season on a nice fall night the deer are everywhere. Same thing as I got close to home running all 480ish miles through Northern MT on hwy 2 in the DARK..... Wild life everywhere and several close calls near Circle, Shelby, and glendive MT there is nothing between these towns and is sometimes nearly a 100 miles between sizable towns.... I had to be very careful though the mountains between East Glacier and home along the southern boarder of the park..... Several Elk lots deer and Mt lion in that last 85 miles passing between the park and national forests on the other side of the road.

Hitting wild life is really the only thing that worries me about driving at night, in fact on longer drives when I have to make time, I prefer to run at night, and the latter the better especially on the east coast and big cities everywhere as traffic is not as stressful and you can relax a little bit compared to day time hours

A few years after living in WA for a year, I drove my 325e back down to CA via Highway 1. Getting down to the halfway marker and finding a place to sleep took way longer then we expected so it was very late at night and the fog had set in thick.
Out of fucking no where this large racoon was in front of us, and I swear to this day I scared the shit out of it and it threw its hands up over its head like "nooooooo dont kill me!" lol
With out my good headlights and my HELLA fog lights I would have had to drive much much slower and that racoon would have been deader then a door nail.
Good light at night is key. And the right light and lens for the condition is important too.

About five years ago some stuff happened and I ended up riding LA to PHX under cover of darkness with a dark smoke shield on a 2006 GSXR750. I couldn't see more than two-three car lengths in front of me so I pretty much figured if something appeared it was too late. Safe trip home, but that was some shit.

I also used to drive down from NAU in Flagstaff, Az to PHX, Az every weekend during the night when I was a freshman in college. 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser, never enough sleep each time. I'd make it to either end and not really remember any of the two hour drive. Terrible idea.

Nothing better than running a vert on a warm summer night in the hills. I like how you can really feel the changes in air temperature. It's also fun to just pull over and shut it off completely and listen for a few minutes to nature and then resume the trip.

I am cautious of not doing this in Squatch territory however.

The only part I don't like about driving at night is when you come up to a stop sign and floating figures in black hooded cloaks silently begin to approach the car.

That, and the clowns with chainsaws... Smh.

Me too. Is that Interstate swinging left....or right....hmm

They've started putting those continuous bright yellow flap reflectors on the center wall around curves on I-90 in MT & ID. You can tell what's going on a mile ahead.

Modern speed limits do not apply to typical OEM headlights - people don't realize they are way overdriving their light's range. Ask me about the deer that tried to total my car. On purpose.

Once on I-90 on the pass from ID to MT I hit a load of bagged onions that had just fallen off a semi. This is a true story! Sharp curves, mediocre lights, no warning - both lanes covered with those orange mesh bags of onions! They didn't reflect light of course. There was no time to react, I aimed for what looked like some truck tire ruts through it and WHAM. Took out the belly pan, the intercooler, and the radiator mounts on a Volvo 850. Alignment screwed up. Insurance people didn't believe me until the adjuster looked underneath -shredded onions in every crevice. That car smelled like onion rings for a year.

Then there's dark and way too tired! I remember a long trip in the middle of the night (I-5 north to Seattle?) where I found myself calmly sitting in a comfy chair, looking out this front window of a car flying down the road. There was a set of arms and hands running the steering wheel, but they weren't really attached to me, I was just sitting there watching it all. THAT freaked me out - I stopped.

Vision acuity and light reactivity are a bit different. I have super shit night vision for example, and no amount of corrective lenses can fix it.

My problem with night driving is oncoming cars. When I first started driving my Jetta, the windshield was pitted so badly that any time someone was coming toward me, the glare was so bad that I couldn't even see and I had to guess to figure out where the road was. After that was replaced, the headlights were the weak point - they were original on a car with 500k, not very good to begin with, and in such terrible shape that they didn't do anything at all to speak of. The ones I replaced them with were better, but still leave a lot to be desired. At least I can see now. Still have trouble with glare from oncoming cars, but it is what it is, and not much I can do about it, unless someone knows something I don't.

As for driving at night in the rain - nope.

I'm with you GG. I don't like night driving one bit. And I think those reflectors should be a requirement on every single road, ever.

I've fallen asleep on the interstate while driving once when I was 14. And that was in the morning when it was light out. So I'm always trying to be careful when I drive long distances or at night. I don't really care for driving at night on those central Kansas backroads. Some of them don't have street lights, or some of our residential streets for that matter.

are you eyes fixed in one position and your head able to swivel almost a full 360 degrees?

If so, you might be owl
