Depends on the issue, could be as simple as MySQL being down and nobody issuing a startup, could be the DB server out of disk space, or could be corrupt tables causing vBulletin to freak out (does not take much)

one of the e3t mods (me) is a devops engineer at a billion-dollar finance company... mysql is an old and deprecated technology, it's what you use to learn. like Sony's My First Database.

i could probably fix this in about an hour with shell access.

james, just curious- ever done cost/benefit on using AWS rather than your own hardware/comms?

but yeah. for something like running a web-forum? it's ace. one HA pair of medium instances behind an ELB would likely be fine.

I use AWS from time to time, we backup to Azure in fact.

I don't like using systems in which I have no direct control over, and while AWS/Azure/VMWare Air are more than capable I simply don't trust them for production day to day.

Yes, its certainly easier, but I have just as much HA (including site recovery services) with my setup for a much lower overall cost.
