I was in same situation, found a US spec BMW in Germany

In the early 80's when I was in stationed in Germany by the Air Force, I stumbled on to a US spec 74 2002. I convinced the owner to sell it to me, (he picked up a new Saab turbo at the factory in Sweden). The owner had the local BMW dealer drop in a factory rebuilt engine (Euro spec). All that customs cared about was that it was US spec when I brought it back (met DOT standards). They didn't care what was under the hood.

I'm guessing that you'll be in the same situation, find a good Euro spec engine and you may be good to go. If you move somewhere back in the states where you have strict smog testing, you may want to rethink your plans. Does the US spec E30 still have a catalytic converter on it? If so, that's a bonus since most of Europe has lead free gas now.

My 02 is long gone (killed by a red light runner) but many a part from that car lives on.

            Engine

A Euro engine will not be a problem for the vehicle inspectors. They are only concerned with the Chasis number. They don't look at the engine code and they will be too busy noting all the dings, dents, and paint scratches. Their biggest concern is noting all damages so they will not be liable once you pick up your car stateside.

I say build the M50, hell, if you just got here you will have time to build and destroy a few engines. If you ever make it to Bamberg (Bavaria) look me up.
