              Carb'ed cars supposedly don't like unleaded fuel...I would therefore say the m10 b16 since it is carbed..

                      In 1988, the main bearings on all 3 series changed. What is the difference between the 2 types of main bearings and are they compatible?

                            Starting in '88 the lower main bearing shell had no groove for oiling. The shells had two lock tabs instead of one. These are basicly the turbo diesel bearings, and are continued on the m-50,52,&54 engines. The also changed the head bolts that year to a torx head which should be used on all M20's at a rebuild.

                            Compatible on pre-88 M20's? Yes, if you grind the extra lock tab groove.
