I did a quick sketch of what I think a modern-day 2002 would like. I tried to incorporate the current BMW design philosophy (Bangle trunk, etc), but also tried to keep the round tailights and level beltline, although it is a wedge shape. And old horizontal grilles just don't work on new cars--sorry guys. I might try another sketch tomorrow--I'm not professional, so my sketch isn't great. But you get the idea.
if BMW brings back the 2002 i'd cry. now would they be tears of joy or disgust? probably the latter.
I'd like it if they did, although I wouldn't call it a 2002. It's been a long time since BMW has had a small, simple, affordable (relatively) coupe. The 3 series is priced in the stratosphere, and a $25,000 successor to the 2002 wouldn't hurt BMW's premium image one bit.
I'm not a fan of retro designs in general, I think they impede progression and are a cheap way of selling cars based on nostalgia rather than creativity, function, and good design. I don't think BMW would or should make a retro-styled car; they sell their cars based on performance and technology and tout themselves as forward looking "a company of ideas". It really annoys me that these retro BMW ideas keep coming up; if BMW ever made one you'd just end up angry and disappointed anyway. Just like the new Mini is really nothing like the original a new '02 would not have the same heart or feel as the original, it can't happen.
"One of my top five favorite, like, cool...nerd cars"
I doubt it'd be profitable, or even LEGAL (emissions, safety regs. etc)
But it'd be cool if BMW Individual or BMW Mobile Tradition would build 'old' new cars like the 2002 or the e30 if the customer specifically ordered them.
id definetly rock it, though i feel the hood is too short. BMW will never again make anything so simple though, theyre doing too well with shittons of creature comforts. any retro 2002 would be a 3500 lb luxury sub-compact "with the spirit of the old classics" or whatever b.s. tagline bmw can come up with.
If BMW made THAT car, or one very similar to it, I'd probably buy one. But chucky is absolutely right, that's probably exactly what they'd do.
I mean, they've done GREAT with the new Mini, I love them, and they're relatively simple. Shit, I've thought about buying one. But I doubt that BMW has any plans to do anything like that, especially with the new 2-series looming not to far off in the distance. I can't wait to see those!
well the 130i isnt a slug but BMW is soon rolling out the 135i, its gonna be one mean 1er, too lazy to go look up photos or specs of one but that thing is gonna be sick.
