    Stroker write up

does anyone have a good link to a stroker write up? I drive a 91 325i, and im looking for a 2.8 or so. read up on the m30 and it didnt sound like it was for me. turnoffs were the added front weight, shortening of driveshaft, ect. plus id like to take apart my engine and craft it myself ( not machining though)

      Here's another stroker write-up....

The only difference in the displacement is which crankshaft you go with. Examples for the "i" spec M20 are:

ETA crank and retain stock sized bore = 2.7L

      524TD (turbodiesel) crank with 1mm overbore = 2.8L

      ETA crank with 1mm overbore = 2.8L

      M50 crank with 1mm overbore = 2.9L

      S50 crank with 1mm overbore = 3.0L

      Jon

P.S. The ETA crank and the TD crank offer the same stroke length (81mm I believe). Only difference is the TD crank is forged, the ETA is cast. Forged is great if you plan on turbocharging your M20. Otherwise, the ETA crank should be sufficient.

Nope. M52 are the 2.8L engines from the '96-'00 E36 328i/is as well as the Z3 (aluminum block). I don't think the cranks from these OBD II motors can work in an M20. Ditto for the S52 crank (E36 M3 3.2L, '96-'99).

The M50 engine was in the '92-'95 325i/is E36 cars. The '92 didn't have VANOS but the '93-'95 did.

Strokers are becoming so common these days,
so are swaps and turbo tricks

Filter and chip are just old :)

the crank from the 3.2l euro M3 will work in the M20 block. It just needs some trimming to the inside walls of the block to clear the larger stroke. Ireland eng. will sell this kit too, if you ask. The 3.0 &3.2 ltr cranks just need a sleeve fabricated for the front main seal shaft, on the origional blocks the seal is smaller. a friend of mine just built one, we compared everything.

Yeah, and strangely there was almost zero information about it 2 years ago.

wait!! I didn't know about the M50 or S50 crank will fit in our M20, what is required exactly to make them fit, also what piston and rod combos should go with these cranks?

That makes me think a bit more of doing a 3.0L stroker...mmm I think I have storage a S50 (Euro) m3 crank in some part of my shopp

Correction, the S52 crank will work, as the dude with the 3.0L iX did. He did something though, like swap it from a timing belt to a timing chain or something..

It's amazing then. There is an overwhelming wealth of information now. Thank you Fred, and thanks to Dave as well, not to mention all the people involved in maintaining forums to share all this info.

Strangely enough all this is becoming popular more than a decade after the end of production. Whereas new cars have turbo kits produced before the car is on the showroom floor.

I have a 2.8 stroker block ready to install into my sport.

It was built using a modified M52 2.8 crank, it had to be machined in order to make it ift.
The piston skirts also had to be machined to clear the crank webs.

I have also just finished building up a new head with a Schrick 284/272 cam and am hoping to get it all together in the next few weeks.

                          Here's a picture or two:
