Can it be true, is my searching finally over?

    Hey guys,

I have a dilemma here and I need your help. I recently came across a '91 318is for sale. Price is right too. Now, for the really shocker.

The car has 46,340 miles. All original. Carfax proves it. In fact, it shows that the car was imported from Guam back in 2001 with 32K on the odometer. Maybe it's owner was in the military cause it ended up in Oakland, CA and now in San Diego. The guys selling it is not the original owner though and has no history of the vehicle except the Carfax. He was going to make it his DD, but he's going to stick to his '91 M5 instead. It's a clean title and no accidents reported. Currently registered and smogged. He got it from an auction. Repo maybe?

I drove it yesterday and it was tight. No problems with the suspension at all. I did hear a slight whine from the rear, but nothing objectionable and very faint. Should I be concerned? Clutch was tight as was the shift gates. Brakes are good and wheels and tires are good as well. No curb rash either. It was repainted though, it's original color, Brilliant Red, and it's a really decent job. Some imperfections here and there, but it does shine nice. No fog lights or sunroof. Body is straight and not gaps in the panels or bumper. There is a slight leak underneath though. The guy tells me it's the seal on the front of the engine. Can that be? Exhaust is good too. Tracks straight and makes no noise when cornering in either direction. It pulled nicely with three people in the car. Not loose at all.

So with all that being said, what is your opinion? Is it worth the investment or should I walk from it? All the other E30's M42's I've driven have not been original and have been modified in one form or another. This one has been the most original and probably the best one despite the leak and repaint. Repaint probably from the hot sun fading it on the island.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks in advance for your help. I just don't want it to be a 'too good to be true' scenario.

    Regards,
    hs

PS: How expensive, do you think, is the maintainance on a 318is, especially that oil leak?

It's not surprising that a car that's obviously sat for a while has a dried up oil seal, don't worry bout it. I'd be more worried about the head gasket, give it a compression test to make sure it's not dry.

My 318is is stock, it's kinda nice having a car that hasn't been funked with previously.

If everything checks out, and you like the price...HIT THAT SHIT

Sounds good to me. What's the asking price? If you are new to E30s, maybe pay a mechanic to give it a good going-over, just so you don't get stuck with a lemon.

if you are hearing a faint hum from the rear, it's probably just the electric fuel pump.

that is really low miles though.. I'd love to have an E30 like that. I still enjoy my 185k beater though ;)

sounds great. have fun. the problems you suggested dont sound too serious and it sounds like you really want the car so go ahead! and that is the least amount of miles on an E30 i have ever seen.

His asking price is about $4K.

Also, I forgot to mention, the A/C works, but doesn't blow that cold. He says it needs a recharge. Radio doesn't work at all either. Everything else is fine.

The more I think about it, the more I'm likely to get it. I think the price is dead nutz! I wanted a silver one or maybe even white, but the red really stood out in person.

Thanks guys and please let the comments continue.

wow, that's VERY low mileage. of course w/ these cars it's not as much the miles as the age (imo) but still, that's unique. I say go for it!

                  Monkeyballs buy that car. $4K?

Although check to see if the profile gasket was replaced. They were recalled (not officially) due to failure, and a hefty bill...and hopefully that is NOT what is leaking from the front.

Here is TRULY all you need:

http://www.esatclear.ie/~bpurcell/index.html This is the 318iS source. Seriously go through this website top to bottom, I understood my car much better after going through this site!!!

                        Thanks all!

Assuming the profile gasket was not done, do you think that I can take it to the dealer and they can run the VIN and see? Will any dealer be able to see the history of the VIN or is it specific to whatever dealer was used as the primary service point? Also, because so many years have gone by, will BMWA still cover it?

Again, the guy selling it does not have any service history on the car. It can only be assumed that the original owner or whomever had it diligently had the vehicle serviced for the profile gasket.

I'll call him later tonight and see. Maybe by tomorrow...

The profile gaskets usually go anywhere between 60-80k so my thoughts are that it hasnt been done. Its going to cost a pretty penny to get it done as well so be prepared for that. I would not be worried otherwise. The leak is definately just from never really being used all that much, and shouldnt be a major problem to fix. Since its been resprayed try and see if it might have been in an accident overseas or something. Not sure if carfax would pick that up. For 4k I would seriously want to make sure all the bases were covered as a car in that good of shape should command a much higher price.
