    Speaking of oilpans.... (iX though)

My sister has a 1991 325iX, and a crack has formed in the oilpan. The stupid mechanic probably overtightened the nut and the crack started from that area. I can't charge the mechanic for it, as we own the shop (I personally think it was one of his lackeys), and it would be like charging us anyway.

Anybody know where I can get a cheaper than BavAuto price ($777) for an iX oilpan?

On top of that, the rack has crapped the bed too, so I need to find a reman'd rack for less than $700 (BavAuto price). Anybody have any ideas? I really love this car, and it would be a shame to not fix it.

Yikes. Are you going to replace the tie rods at the same time? They're like $280 a pair. If the BavAuto rack comes complete with tie rods, it's a good deal, especially if it's a ZF Reman. ZF Reman racks run around $450+ on almost every BMW application anyway. Might wanna go used on both of these items.

See if the head rebuilding place you use can weld it. If it's not too bad...
          I got a quote for $150.00 for a crack in a pan I have.

Tierods were just done a couple weeks ago. It's how I found out about the oilpan and rack.

I'll probably go new for the pan, and reman'd for the rack. I don't know how I'd feel about a re-welded oilpan, expecially since my sister tracks the car, and drives the snot out of it.

I have a pan I can probably sell.. came off my '91 auto motor. PM me with an offer if you are interested.

as far as the rack, I got my ZF reman rack from BMA - I think it was $450 after I got my core charge refunded. definitely go with the ZF reman though, you don't want to do an ix rack twice!

just have the pan tig welded. i used to do it for the bmw shop next door to us all the time at my last shop. not a big deal to do. they will just have to burn off the oil w the torch first (you must bring it to the shinny clean) there will still be a little oil in the crack that you can't clean away. grind it a little on the crack then weld it. run back over it with the torch again to make sure it is sealing (not pretty looking, but when weldin on contaminated alum it is the best way to make sure you have it sealed) no big deal!

and you might need to retap the oil drain plug hole after possable warpage if the crack goes to the hole , or weld it up and redrill it (it will be stronger that way)

I had mine welded 3x. (2 pans) Worked fine (until the next time I bottomed it)
