    And the verdict is....

No contest, but it was for speeding instead of reckless driving. I lucked out today.

The asshole DA that was originally assigned to my case didn't show up for work. Instead, a younger DA was in charge of all 7 cases that were to be held in that particular courtroom for the entire day. All of them were multiple count misdemeanor/felony charges and all of them requested jury trials. I was the only defendent with one charge against me, and it was a comparatively minor one at that.

The DA, who was a hell of a lot smarter than the previous prosecutors I've had, called my lawyer aside and said, "Listen, I have 6 other trials today and I don't want to fuck around with this bullshit. How about we drop this to a speeding ticket and call it a day?" That was what I originally asked four months ago, so it was perfect. I entered a plea of no contest and the judge accepted. He fined me $20 and ordered me to pay it within a month. I think I can manage that ;).

My lawyer told me that this behavior is typical of this county...they hardball you at first and go for the maximum penalty, refuse to drop or lower the charges, then when the day comes for a jury trial they back off. That's the legal system for ya.

Anyway, I'm happy to get off with such a minor penalty after all this. And I definitely won't be speeding around the airport anytime soon. Thanks to all for the support!

Good to hear it man. That's great news.

Even if the attorney fees are high; it's still better than going to the slammer.

Our legal system can be a royal pain in the ass sometimes. The whole things was pretty messed up to begin with.

Good job stickin' to your guns

Congrats. It's too bad that you had to deal with all the bullshit and stress up until now to just get a $20 fine.

Hey Fred, just an aside here. I am jumping in late but for future reference to all you guys. I am not sure if this will apply in your particular situation, but if I read right you stated you pulled over and waited. Maybe there were no other cars out there, but often people incriminate themselves by slowing down and often pulling onto the soulder and stopping. Tha's announcing "HEY, IT WAS ME SPEEDING!" I have over the years had many friends in law enforcement from PD, HP, SO to a buddy now with the Federal Marshall Srvce. They have often said they pull over those that act like they were doing something wrong. In heavy traffic, it's sometimes a best guess. I have sat with them on "radar shoots" and had trouble identifying the speeders from the law abiders.

Case in point: Last night I was coming home from "tailing my subject" and I was cruising at say 85mph. This on I-59, limit 70mph. So I see the HP in the median, too late, and as I pass I see his blues come on. I think this is "not too good" and I slow to about 70ish, but stay in the left lane. It took him some time to get onto the highway and I saw him coming way back. I continued to travel in the left lane. I look back again and he's merging into the right hand lane a ways back, and shortly I don't see him anymore. HE GOT SOMEONE ELSE!!!

Take it for what it's worth. It may not always work, but it did last night. The alternative, get your buddy on the force to fix it :D

Thanks guys! Jordan, let's just say the lawyer bill was as much as a set of 4 brand new 17" RD RGQ wheels with tires.

Jarvis, my thoughts exactly. But hey, it coulda been worse!

Cam, sorry, I've been busy all weekend. I'll get to your email in a bit.

Bobby, that's a good point, but in my case the cop was on foot when I drove by him and he hopped into his Crown Vic and chased me down. Took him a good 5 minutes and half a mile before he caught up to me, and by that point I was going the flow of traffic. A second cop came 5 minutes after that, and my lawyer speculated that the 2nd cop talked his buddy into giving me the reckless ticket for giving him such a hard time.

Eric, yeah, I think I'll sleep pretty good tonight, but like I said my lawyer did come out ahead of everyone ;).
