We don't have it in the NW yet, but there is ethanol at the pumps in many midwest states, and many car manufacturers are making their engines compatible with ethanol (MB, Ford, etc..). There was a show on PBS a while back on ethanol as a fuel source and they were testing a MBZ C230 with it. The car actually shaved over a tenth off of it's 0-60 time with the ethanol (however, fuel economy was slightly less than gasoline, which would be expected given the size of the molecules). Furthermore, I've heard many debates regarding the subject and some argue that we'll always be using oil because the large oil companies and auto manufacturers have such close ties with the EPA and other govt. agencies. However, the large oil companies such as Dutch Shell, British Petroleum, and Exxon have already begun researching the alternative fuel sources listed above. They're already planning on making the switch to hydrogen and ethanol as soon as we are...
if you mean ethanol created by growing corn.. the amount of land needed to grow enough corn to satisfy our energy needs with ethanol is not realistic, plus you still need energy to harvest it. sorry, it's not an alternative. neither is hydrogen, it's an energy carrier not an energy source, you need more energy to create hydrogen than you get back out of it, so it's a net loss.

we've already used about half of all the oil that exists on the planet, and it's when you get to the 50% mark that things start going down the tubes. we're going to run into supply problems long before any alternatives are viable enough to fully replace oil.

sorry bud, what took billions of years to create we've burned through half of in a little over 100. it's half gone, and there's not going to be anymore to replace it.

exactly. and zero emmisions by 2010 will never happen! they might make a dent, but what are they going to do, suddenly force people to stop driving their 2005 Escalades with 24" rims? not to mention the millions of older cars that still run (including our cars). and by 2010, the oil peak will have already happened, unfortunatley..

i agree with you but the zero emissions is for the 2010 models car. old cars are grandfather and if it peaks bf then cars like our will in our garage or the yard. what im trying to say is that money is the driver of everything, when the oil hit 20 bucks a gal. people will be waiting in line to buy Honda civics hybrids. then all automakers will fall in suit. like i said bf the 80's gas was .80 a gal. and it didnt matter how inefficient engines where. but after the 80's cars like the eta was a hot seller. history will repeat itself

the issue with that is, there are a LOT of poor people who simply cannot afford to buy a $20000 hybrid to replace their $500 chevy caprice or old beatup truck.. those people are going to have a tough time surviving in the future.

I'm not saying there's no hope.. but ignoring the problem isn't going to make it go away.
