I have used Krylon on quite a few parts, but recently changed to VHT and I like the way it cures better. It feels a lot harder and more durable... Though, the Krylon covers I have out there are holding up great. I've got one on my 6...

i cleaned, sanded, primed and krylon krinkled... awesome finish but does not hold up as well as i would have liked. still looks great though, you have to look close to see where its flaked or marred, like at bolt holes.

So how about the new (or at least i think so) HD wrinkle paint calls for around 80F for the max temp. Would it be a bad idea to still go ahead and use the room heater / box trick?

I always used about 120 degrees (f) to bake mine.

          Hopefully HD has not reformulated!

my buddy used that Krylon stuff on a couple 300zx motors he was building, they have held up pretty well so far (~1year). the red looks terrible though, its not a good red. you will be happier if you go all black.

I used a room heater in a garage for the Krylon paint for both my valve cover and air intake. I cleaned the hell out of the parts, made sure no finger prints got onto the metal and followed the directions to a t... Not one flake or chip yet (and getting close to the year mark).

It's all about the prep work and application.. Any of these paints mentioned above will hold up as long as you take your time and do it right.

Or it has been reformulated or I did not buy the right paint... bought this
                        this afternoon.

Instructions at the back of the can:
1.Surface must be free of grease, rust and wax
2.Allow can to warm to room temp.
                        3.shake the stupid can
                        4.Test spray on surface sample
5.If spray stops or is irregular spin the nozzle. should fix the problem.
6.when finished painting clean the valve by holding the valve upside down
                        and spraying for 2-3 sec.
7.Never spray with valve partly open. press all the way down
8.To use use entire content, hold sprayhead and rotete until material
                        spray.
Note:Two or three liberal coats are required to provide adequate film
thickness for "wrinkling". Allow 5-10min dry time between coats
Note:A "wrinkle" finish does not appear immediatly after spraying allow two
hour for air dry. (temperature must be a minimum of 70F and a max
                        of 85F and humidity maximum.)

then there is only warnings. there is no mention of baking...
Did I bought the right stuff or is there trim HD wrinkle paint and engine HD
                        wrinlke paint?

^ I have three cans of that. Two valve covers and one intake is being done. I'll do some experimenting with the valve covers and see what happens.

The cans are super hard to work with. If your nozzle won’t spray after following the directions, remove it and spray with breaklean to clean it out. After that it worked like a charm. My first can didn’t work at all, so that’s going back for an exchange.

I decided to stick with the direction and not bake it at all. I'll let the three coats dry overnight and then sand off the fins and apply one more coat. Hopefully this new formula is just as good

I found the can that I did mine with 6 years ago - VHT wrinkle finish. There's one chip on it from me dropping a wrench, but it's never peeled or flaked. All I did was scrub it with simple green, spray, and slap it on.

They are not kidding about not using an oven that will be used as a place to cook food ever again. The smell never goes away. Never.

You will find that with minimal effort you can do a wrinkle finish that will be damn near indestructable. Attack that stuff with a screwdriver and it is still hard to scratch. The wrinkle is tight and beautiful, just like an HD engine.

                                Expect about $22 a bigger-than-average can.

Unless it's a very high-temp part, I'd just get some high-temp wrinkle finish powder coat.
