    Fuel pumps are cheap and easy if it were to really damage it enough.

        true. regardless of that you'll still get stuck on the side of the road if it fails.

            not true. I always run mine down to the light, and my fuel pump is working great at 186k.

                Mine comes on spontaneously, sometimes a little above red, sometimes well after.

                    I run mine to empty a bunch. Many times I've filled my car up with a jug that I've found in the trash can at a gas station. the problem with that is that all the sediment at the bottom of the tank then gets sucked into your fuel system, not the best thing to do.
