Dang it hasnt even been 12 hrs since opec made its anouncement and all the local gas stations already raised their price by $.10! Adding insult to injury the third largest refinery in the US blew up yesterday so that is gonna mean shortages in the coming months for the whole southwest.So I guess gas in Texas will finally top $2 a gallon for regular.Funny how it was only like $.63 in spring of 2001.

I can only imagine California.I bet they will hit $3.50+ This is all great news for those holding oil stocks and futures.My professor said that he stands to make something like $50000 on his futures if oil hit $40 a barrel by June.This will happen of course.Lucky bastard!

Back on topic...luckily I have my old faithful eta that delivers 30+ MPG with the a/c at 75-80 on the freeway!Etas do rock after all!

I heard that the goverment is going to tax gas prices alot to reduce the amount of people driving.... haha ya right, like that would happen.
But I am not sure if they were talking about the country or just Califorina :?

I dont understand why they keep cutting production and holding oil, its not like we are going to run out any time soon.....

They do it to keep the prices of crude up. If they produce more they will make less per barrell.

Omfg, but enough is enough!

When I started driving ( legally w/ my father ) at 15 we refilled gas tanks w/ 93 octane for ~$1.15 a gallon. I got a 10c per gallon discount Shell and I refilled at $1.93 two days ago.

the other issue is we are at (or near) a peak in worldwide production.. not an artificial one created by OPEC either (although they certainly don't help). gas is going to become very expensive, you guys will think $2 a gallon is cheap!

We are not reall near peak, we just use our resources unwisely. The prices are really just a reflection of market sentiment. People think there is a shortage to the companies know they can get away with charging more. They milk you for every cent they possibly can.

Here for example gas by me is 10c higher than it is on the east side of town. The taxes are the same and so is the climate so why such a change? Its because the taxes in MO are 10c cheaper on gas so the stations closer to MO cant get away with charging such high prices. The two closest QTs here have a 5c difference in price.

The gas stations you see with a lot of variance in their pricing has to do with the fact they they purchase their fuel on the spot market.....which is in perpetual change. The franchise owned stations for large companies (i.e. Shell, Chevron, Unocal) have more stabilization in their pricing since they purchase fuel on a grand scale.

However, I don't see the prices dropping anytime soon. In addition to cutting back the available supply, the demand will soon increase with the summer travel season a mere 2 months away. Suppliers are just going to keep the prices where they are now or raise them.

That's my take.

Funny thing is, that when you think about the peak prices that were so high back in the early 80's, and compensate those prices with inflation, then compare them to today's...gas was cheaper back then.

Plus with all the SUVs and not fuel efficient vehicles on the road, people aren't phased by the prices.

OPEC is just letting it roll in.

I hate gas. my pathfinder get 15 mpg around town. It cost at least 30 bucks to fill the tank. Just make it cheap, use it all up, and find some other source of power already

OPEC has said many times before that they were going to cut production, and not once have they followed through. Remember the countries that are involved here, someone always cheats on their quota and the others always follow. The cause is the fact that what OPEC says has more impact on prices than what they actually do. On top of that we consume more than we can refine each day. Its something like 20 million barrels consumed to 16 million produced. We really need more refineries to meet the growing demand. And the dollar being so weak doesn't help either.

not too bad.... but $20k ( or $250? monthly ) for a hybrid car does make it seem like a long time to pay off with the advantage of better mileage.

That one has 90k miles..... and to buy one with that mileage you would be thinking of some maintenance on it already.....which actually makes me think if the Hybrids are any more expensive to own than any regular Honda Civic.....
