Hrmmmm, I just really don't like the styling of it at all. To be honest, I like this better:

And before I bought either one, it would be this. I just love the way this car looks:

I'd drive it, but the headlights are too big for the car. Makes it look bug-eyed. I've already made it clear I'd drive the cabrio version on the other 1-series thread.

Josh, I really liked the new Volvo too, although I thought the interior was very plain. I like the new Rabbit/GTi, but VW's quality just doesn't impress me. I'd never seriously consider buying one because of that.

Awesome imho, my brother drove a four door, and said it was sluggish...who knows,

it looks like an 07' rabbit got lost in Zurich and came out looking like this...

My only qualm is it looks maybe a bit ricy?...hope not a sign of things to come.

VW rabbit and VW GTI are different animals. Rabbit is more of a cheap daily with the 2.5 NA engine and GTI has better everything with the 2.0T that is very tunable via just software. It's the same engine that's used in many Audi A4s. I don't think a VW is any more problematic than say a MB or BMW, i've had 0 problems with my r32 in over 20k miles in one year of really hard driving.

The one "premium" hb that I would love to drive is this - Audi Shooting Brake. IMHO it looks better than the Volvo and BMW hatches.

I don't think 300lbs difference between that car and a late model 325i (2,800) would even feel noticable with the changes in suspension design.

I bet they'll flop like the Audi A3s at 30k to 40k. Premium HBs in US = fail.

Thats the problem- we would never ever see a budget BMW in the states again, and thus the only 1 series we will ever see, if any, will most likely be the 135i, and unfortuantely, it will be priced sooo high, it will fail miserably. Mark my words, it will flop much worse than the 318ti did, IMHO.

i'd rock a 2 door 120d any day... especially if there is a "hot" version with m-goodies. but yeah, it'll fail.

How will the price compare to the C230? That will determine if anyone buys these things.

What BMW ought to do is offer the coupe and sedan base six cylinder (2.5 liter) starting at $24,000, and fill the price gap between the $32,000 base of the 3-series with other 1-series variants (starting with 125i, 120d, 130i [N52], 135i M).

BMW, unlike Mercedes, can afford to go downmarket, because, although they're known as a premium brand, they got their start building basic sport sedans. You can always take sport downmarket--you can't take luxury (which Mercedes has found out).

BMW, of course, won't do this, and will offer a 135i for $33,000, and no one will buy it.

The 1 series is seriously nasty. Looking forward to driving one though.
