Penzoil is about the worst crud you could use. Somehow every car I've ever seen that used that stuff has the inside of the engine stained brown as if the oil had never been changed.

I always use either Mobil1 15-50 or Castrol syntec 20w50. Mobil1 is rated for 15Kmiles or better but I always change my oil around 5K miles. My first E30 had 275K miles with no engine work before I sold it and there was no oil burn either.

this car sees -10 degrees in the winter and 100+ in the summer.

I would test the car a bit before running 20-50. If the pressure release valve on the pump is at all clogged it will cause problems for you.

After seeing years and years of engines running on synthetic, I won't ever touch the stuff.

When I see an car for sale with an Ad that states "synthetic since new, or always changed synthetic" I RUN AWAY!

Yeah it really does seem like it is personal preference. As far as penzoil is concerned i have been using 15-40 non synthetic since i bought my eta with 177,xxx miles and i now have 232,xxx with no problems. i usually use 4 quarts of penz. oil 15-40 and i quart of lucas oil stabilizer. it has been working well for me.

I think you summed it up when you said "seems like personal preference", the only thing I can add to that is "duh". :)

Post this question on ANY car-related board and you'll likely get similar replies, just switch out the different brands/weights of oil and you can do it like an oil mad-lib.

1- I would never use _________ oil, I always use ________ and my car has 1,000,000,000 trouble-free miles on it- oh, yeah, change it every __________ miles.

2- _____________ oil is great, my ______________ (insert DAD/FRIEND/UNCLE/GRANDMA here) has been a mechanic for 40 years and that's the only oil they will use, all other oils are crap and will sludge up your engine after 20 miles.

Personally, I'm not very brand-loyal when it comes to oil. I generally use whatever name brand dino juice I have on hand. In my experience, if you change the oil and filter on a regular basis (i.e.- something ~5-6k between changes or less if you feel like you need to), and just keep your car somewhat maintained- it will last for a LONG time- provided you don't overheat it or run it out of oil (or break the timing belt...). Simple as that, really.

It's the cars that never get their oil changed that get sludged up and look like Blunt took a dump inside the valve cover.

I once heard the following theory from a petroleum chemist- and it makes sense to me. All oils will leave different types of deposits and clean different types of deposits in your engine. So, it's probably a good idea to switch brands/types of oils each time you change your oil- the deposits left by one oil will eventually be cleaned out by another.

                  Bret.

That's what i'm running now during winter. The engine starts up in the cold very well and runs smooth. And I do a lot of free way driving so i'm not worried about wear on the engine by running a lighter oil. Also, running a lighter oil is better for gas mileage if you're a commuter like me. I switch to 10w-50 in the summer.

I always change the oil every 3000 miles.

Not only is it good for the engine (even though 5,000 is okay)
but it gives you a chance to look around and see if anything else is going on that you need to know about.

all I know is when I switched to mobile 1 synthetic on my stroker, it got WAY quieter (especially when first starting up).

but probably the only thing that really matters (aside from personal preference) is that you change your oil regularly and let your oil warm up before you drive it hard.
