im not so sure about this but i've heard that cops are starting to use a new kind of radars, instead of beign on all the time; the radar shoots the signal, and stop sending it , then it sends it back, like going on, off, on, off, so its really hard for a radar detector to detect the signal. :?

yes, its called instant on. its relatively new, so not a majority of cops have it.

I'm pretty sure the V1 does an OK job detecting this. If they are shooting a strong signal all at once, wouldn't the signal level jump up at, for example, Ka, then disappear. That'd be a big hint to me. Course, if they instant on right on you, your screwed. But, that's why you look for cops too.

There is no such thing as "instant on" radar. Radar relies on two signals: one signal that is sent out to the object and reflected back, and a second, "base" signal synthesized within the unit. When the unit is powered up, it takes anywhere from 5-10 seconds for the signal generator, a "Gunn" oscillator, to stabilize this reference signal and begin to measure speeds accurately. Sure, a cop can pull the trigger and record you the instant it turns on, but it will be wildly inaccurate.

          All taken from V1.

Radar detector does not equal invisibility cloak

i agree that all it takes is a little bit of caution. I've been driving for two years and never gotten a ticket, and only gotten pulled once. i got pulled for being a complete jackass and i deserved more than i got thanfully, but the point is, is that as long as you don't blatantly speed down roads you know you shouldn't been speeding on in the first place, you should be ok. I've grown up around cops, and i can tell you from expirience, yes, there are the "bad" cops that look to pull someone over as a way to justify them wearing that uniform, cause you know, "they're the high and mighty Cop that just ruined your day", but at the same time, there are plenty of aweosme cops that let things slide and unless you are being obviously stupid and dangerous, they won't bother you.

I'll clear a few things up. Laser is the newer technology that is "on" then "off." If you have a laser detector, you're going to get nabbed by laser anyway.

My dad is a cop. I've gone to work with him on several instances when they have the the grant from the federal government (can't think of the name off the top of my head). My dad used to have radar in his car, but doesn't anymore due to health issues with the radar. When he does traffic control, they use laser. Laser is nothing like radar. Laser has a trigger and is used just like a gun. You aim, pull the trigger, and the signal is back and off again. The only thing that you can normaly hit with laser and get a reading back from is a license plate. If you've been nabbed by a cop for not having a front license plate when you know damn well you were speeding, you now know why.

Anyways, having been with my dad on several occasions, he pulled someone over with a K1 Laser/Radar detector. My dad asked why the thing didn't work to the driver and the guy said he didn't know but he knows it wasn't worth the $400 he spent on it.

So with everything said, if you're the target of laser: tag, your it.
