Ah, wow. Looks like I slept through all the crazy posting on this thread.
yo, Torque is tight. If I wanted to daily driver a inline-4 and have to work that lil hamster I'd still be driving a G20 or Integra.......but fuck that. I craze the great experience of a BMW inline-6 each day. The sound, the love.
Torque is tight. Radius times fucking force, bitch. Or moment of inertia times alpha, bitches.
Sure it's lighter, and arguably more tossable, but for daily driver, I want that 6.
The only thing in a 325is/M3 that I find worthwhile is the cruise control.
I prefer cloth or vinyl seats in an E30.
Good luck finding a 325is in Diamondschwarz.
Have fun with those timing-belt replacements.
Have fun paying for E30 M3 parts.
Have fun adjusting your valves.
Have fun painting/taping up ( ) your window trim.
I dig the 3.73LS, OBC, Power Sunroof
I have a leather fetish.......;)
Zinno owns me.
Just got it done - good for 4 years.......biotch
ha......
I was definately going to.....only to see broken rocker arm......:?
Fuck shadowline.....I like chrome 8)
I had the opportunity to buy a red 318is.....but I turned it down like a Herpes-infested crack whore. I'd know I'd hate the lack of power and torque every day. If I wanted to work to extract power, I'd get a B18A. Honda motors w/o VTEC blow. Somehow I don't see M42 as different.
How come Bryson put in a M20 in place of the M42......and why did Stu replace the 4-cylinder lump in his engine bay?
Because M42's are weaksauce. :P

ahem........do you need to be reminded?
oh yeah. RWD, it does make a difference....... but you're still having to wind up that 4 a lot to get anywhere.....
I like the punch the M20 packs. With the inline 4's, I thrashed those pretty well......only way to get anywhere with them. But going fast with a 6 is easier..... I like the lack of effort!
It's not possible to get the power I prefer out of an M42 or M20 for the driving I do. Plus, I like to rip up backroads and not even need to get past 3500.
Also, my friends chipped '89 325is only beat me by a tenth of a second at the drag strip, with the M42.
Oh yea, and I was running a 3.73 in it at the time. :P

Your M42 must be fast!!!!!!! even with the 3.73.
Can u recall wat speed u hit at 1/4 mile?
Will be testin my M42 with 3.73 tonite using G Tech Pro meter... Will use your speed @ 14 mile as benchmark.
In the last 2 years Ive driven the fllowing cars on the track:
1.9L Z3
M Coupe
I have had more fun driving 4 bangers than I have had with any six. Going from the s52 to the M42 didnt really bother me. Its all in how the motors are driven. On track with the 318is Im really not that much slower than I was with the M Coupe. The M Coupe was nice due to torque, which was beneficial powering up the hill coming out of turn 7 or the esses at Watkins Glen. Heck with a M42/44 coming out of turn 1, you are flat out, pedal to the metal all the way to the bus stop.
With the 1.9 I ran down Vipers, M3s, M5s, 5.0 Mustangs, 911s, Porsche 951s, Corvettes and even caught a 996TT in turn 11 at Watkins Glen. Drivers askd me if I had a i-6 or even a supercharger under the hood.
With the 318is I ran down a Ferrari 308GTS a 911 Carrera S.
To go fast your first have to learn how to go slow. Like I said, its not about the motor, its about learning how to drive a slow car fast.
Theres nothing like driving the car at its absolute limits. Power makes things easy. Lack of power, makes things a challenge.
Drving a slow car has made me a faster driver and I have a hell of a time deflating the egos of drivers that drive much faster cars

1/8 mile. Short track. Interestingly enough, the most fun part was the left-hand corner at the end of the strip, where you turn around to come back.
My speed in the 1/8 mile was in the high 60's, I'll have to check my timeslips next time I am at home. Comparing your speed to my speed is an inefficient way of comparing. It's just like comparing dyno numbers. Plus, comparing a guage in the car against a drag-strip time isn't accurate. We all know there has been speculation as to whether the G-Tech is accurate, be it slower or optimistic.
Your best bet is to compare the cars 1/4 mile with the GTech with a 3.73 in the car, and then with a 4.10. Then you'll get real answers. But as I mentioned in another thread, the actual straight-line performance doesn't decrease much in a 318is when going from a 4.10 to 3.73--the car just feels much more sluggish.
