It's the same with all BMW owners, people get defensive about what cars they have:

-Automatic owners say their cars are better because they can drink their coffee and relax in heavy traffic.
-Non-VANOS M50 owners say their engines have greater potential than VANOS engines.
-OBD I owners say their engines are more tuneable than OBD II engines.
-4 cylinder owners say they don't like torque.
-Eta owners say they like low RPMs because it reduces wear and tear.
-2002 owners say that E21s are bulky and heavy
-E21 owners say that E30s are bulky and heavy.
-E30 owners say that E36s are bulky and heavy.
-E36 owners say that E46s are bulky and heavy.
-E46 owners say that their cars are the best and everything else is garbage.

It's all personal preference and people can go into a pissing contest all day long about why they prefer a certain car. I like six-cylinder motors and wouldn't piss in my pants if I saw a 318is for sale, but I'd certainly take one as a second car.

Amen Fred, IMHO there is nothing like the sound of a straight 6 from Munchen. Everyone believes their stuff is the best, it's just your opinion. And this is my drunk one, sorry,

I've driven both (well if you count the ix.. it has an M20, even though it's totally different from the 325i). the 318 is definetly lighter and more tossable.. but you really gotta wind it up to get any power out of it. if all I ever wanted to do was autocross, I'd probably get a 318is, but I'd like to do some road racing someday too.

as far as driving the M20 at it's limits.. that's not too hard. you're not likely to do any damage to the engine with the stock rev limiter (or even a chip), and it's pointless to go much above 6k anyway. changing the timing belt takes an hour or less, and same with valve adjustments, neither need to be done all that often.

I'm sure autocrossing a 325is is a lot of fun, if my experience with a 4 door automatic 325ix is anything to go by. that said, the first autocross practice of the season is today :)

I'm hoping my friend will sell me his 318is, it's diamond black with 190k, needs a new hood and fender and lots of maintenance, but I could do all the work myself and have a pretty sweet car for dirt cheap :)

I was thinking about this post and I realized, 318is is not really more expensive than other 1991 e30's, just more than older ones.

I think it's partly psychological with general public thinking about airbags and 1991 sounds significantly newer than 1989 etc even though it's not, also a lot of 318is don't have that many miles.

Have you guys priced out 1991 325i/sport? they are not cheap either!

I think those 91 325i Sports were more rare than the 91 318is too. (correct me if I'm wrong)

Probably but how about the 325i 1991 those are certainly not cheap either.

Yeah, if you want cheap HP and throttle response...... :?

M10 power baby is the way to go!
Seriously, a monsterly powerful Turbo M10 would own.

318is are hot because they are light. If you like light cars that can handle, and don't care about HP, get one.
If you like leather, sunroof, and the torque of a 2.5 SOHC 6, get a 325is.

I don't think this debate will be settled anytime soon. But it's good to discuss it.
But it is true Fred: "E36s are bulky and heavy" God bless E30s.

                                Sorry, the E30 318i M10 weighs 140 pounds LESS than the E21 320i....2360 pounds vs. 2500.
