    Can an E30 be fast?

After looking around the site, it seems that e30s, while amazing cars for handling, don't go fast in a straight line. I don't need a speed demon, as handling is my #1 priority, but I don't want a slow car. If i get can easily whooped by b16 civics, integras, modded neons and the like, what's the point? My question is whether getting an E30 is a good choice if I want something to beat up the majority of the above. Please tell me I can.

but without spending rediculous amounts of money? I had a civic before, I'd rather have a bimmer. A quick one.

Define "ridiculous amounts of money", most people on r3v's budget for an engine rebuild is like 15$ and a pack of bubble gum.

                I'm thinking $3000 on the engine's performance. After that $3000, could I have a sub 15sec 1/4 mile?

are turbo bimmers historically reliable? Cuz I really want one, but I would hate to get beat up by a stock integra or civic si.
