Pretty cool editorial on the E30 M3 in the latest Sport Compact Car Mag

Not something you see every day, SCC is the only sport compact based magazine I will read (I'm a subscriber) and there was an editorial on the E30 M3, titled "Ode to the Warthog". I enjoyed it, hopefully you guys will too :)

I'm not surprised to find myself looking at old M3's again. Seems like no matter how many cars I own or lust after, I always come back to the E30 M3. Never owned one, but driven a few.

They're harder than hell to find, most have been molested by wishful kids with big wallets and/or mashed into guadrails and trees. Many have been put back together shoddily - thank god for Carfax. The fact that 5,000 were made altogether means that if you want a clean one in 2007, you're going to pay for it. And it's widely known in M3 circles that the E30 is a car you can pay $10,000 or $15,000 for.

Spend $10,000 and you'll drop at least another $5,000 bringing it to good working order. The fifteen grand, on the other hand, buys a well sorted example. Naturally, I'll be looking for a $10,000 M3, because like most car people I enjoy putting myself through the pain of 'fixing it up.'

You really have to want one to take the plunge. Why consider dropping 15 large on a car thas about 20 yeras old and probably isnt making anything close to the paltry 195bhp when it was new? Better yet, for $4,000 more it's possible to have a 2003 Lancer Evolution.

Horsepower is cheap these days, and plentiful. In the era of the E30 M3, 195bhp was miraculous from a road-going 2.3L Inline-4. Nowadays, a Honda Civic Si makes more from two liters, gets twice the gas mileage and isn't anywhere near as tempermental. Maintenance means changing the oil every 3,000 miles. That's it. The M3, on the other hand, demands constant
attention. What's wrong with people like me--why do we still want the thing?

A similar argument exists in the world of watches. The best timekeeper ever made is a Casio, not a Rolex. But there's just something about a 'nice watch' that keeps people spending their thousands. The vision, perhaps, that somewhere in Switzerland, there's a white-haired man with a pair of fine tweezers putting the thing together.

The M3 is the epitome of the fine watch argument. The fact that there are road-going versions at all is a fluke - BMW wouldn't have built a single one but for racing. There isn't a part on the car that isn't designed for racing; individual throttle bodies, three times the caster of angle of the standard 3-Series, a Getrag dog-leg gearbox, big brakes from the 5-Series, and a limited-slip differential. The list goes on.

Brands like Rolex and Omega, once noted for their accuracy, should have folded the day the quartz watch was invented. Ten bucks will buy a watch that keeps time better than any expensive, Swiss chronograph. Similarly, there are scores of modern cars with chassis 10 times as stiff as the old M3. Thanks to turbochargers, they have gobs more power too. Like high-end timepieces, the E30 M3 is utterly obsolete.

But the fact it hasn't faded proves a valuable point. With all the advances in the automotive world in the past few decades, the fun factory hasn't improved at all. Seems you can't really engineer "fun" into a car.

As cool as outright speed and point-to-point potential is, I don't realyl care about setting a record time on my way to the drugstore (or, for that matter, on the track). I also couldn't care if all-wheel-drive is the fastest way over a twisting road, or if there are systems that can make me a better driver by applying the brakes at each wheel at exactly the right time. It doesn't matter to me that a monkey can make a car with 195bhp, either.

Twenty years later, the E30 M3 still has the capacity to keep its owners on the edge of the driver's seat. Most car people will admit to lusting after one at least once in their lives. It's a pain the ass to maintain, it doesn't like doing errands and it gets crappy gas mileage. There's nothing sleek about it, girls will laugh at you and, by modern standards, it's slow.

    I want one.
Pretty much the perfect way to address the "Maybe the E30 M3 isn't really worth the money.." thread.

    Sex.

My copy just came in the mail yesterday, I jsut about spit out my breakfast when I turned the page and saw the red M3 photo.

A few months back they ran a huge photo of a clean E30 325i, too. I think it was the European Car project one.

scc used to be good until the primedia nazis came and trimmed the fat.. the only good magazine worth reading anymore is grassrootsmotorsports and performance vw and bmw :)
That being said i have always liked e30 m3s..the same way i like my buddies vr 6 supercharged corrado its fun to look at hell its even fun to drive but its not mine . I think the reg ole facelift is a much better bang for your buck car in the end :) who cares if it does'nt have widebody flares and a glued in front windshield . I dont wear clothes from AE or weird italian shoes nor will u find me wearing silk shirt to drive in :)

I still think SCC is a great magazine; it's actually the ONLY thing I subscribe to, and it costs 3x as much as the mainstream rags (for Canada at least).

Great tech articles, and no stupid discussion of bodykits/tvs/models/neons/etc like the rest. They're serious track junkies, and always have something interesting to write about. They're also not biased, so there's cars from all over the place (except for American muscle, I guess they're not really "compact").

This is exactly why I love it. It's the only "ricerish" mag i subscribe to.

Ah yes, the magazine used to be huge! The first time I bought it was because it was 3.99 and three times the size of SuperStreet (I was 13). Now Primedia is trying to sell it. I hope somebody picks it up and keeps it a good magazine.

A few years ago were the glory years for SCC. The magazines used to be a lot bigger and there were a lot more pretty hard core technical articles. Even right now when the magazine is slimmed down just about everywhere, it still is 100x more informative than any magazine like Super Street, etc which are total garbage in my eyes.

I actually used to read SCC back in the day. SOmehow it was the only mag that interested me from the Jap scene. Wierd. Id like to see the pic they used!! Im all for getting our car out there to other types of enthusiasts. That way they may recognize it for the car it is, instead of a "kitted 3 series that was out before they ever had ///M3's" As Ive overheard about my car. hehe

Because the fender flares and rear window high decklid/spoiler look like cheap boy racer add ons. A 20 year old car that a kid is trying to make look "cool" We may not think so because our distorted perception see's it as form following function. Historically there has been a parallel between the cost of a cheap average house and the best cars. My wife is just not interested in cars but every now and then she will say , "Now I like that". 9 times out of 10 it costs over $150,000. The other day a new 750li passed us and she said, "You know I've never liked Buicks.
