Damn, VA sounds like it SUCKS for driving. I knew you guys couldn't have radar detectors, but all that shit is wack.

OK - I must be slow - how is 70 in a 55 add up to 20 miles over or a reckless charge? Also, I can't imagine that judges have no discretion - I'm guessing the lawyers are going to eat this up trying to get people out of these...

I'd get an attorney and tell this story. If you weren't driving in a way to justify the reckless charge, weren't documented on radar at 20MPH over, I don't see how that can stick. Driving without a front plate makes you an easy target.

I am feeling incredibly lucky now that I never got pulled over doing 145mph (indicated) in my Alfa... The speedo and the tach were pinned and I was on a stretch of I-70 between GJ and the Utah border (somewhere)... We kept it from 130mph to 145mph for a good 20 or 25 minutes and never saw a cop.

Thank God... That woulda been jail time for sure.

Disclaimer: All speeds are "indicated", I don't give a fuck what percentage off that might be... And I was 17, I don't need any lectures on the dangers of speeding. I know it was dumb.

Who ever said speeding was dumb? Personally I think its fun myself.

I feel a sense of relief knowing that these hefty fines only apply to VA residents. Most times when I have to go into Virginia I tend to have a chip on my shoulder thinking that the state residents get to get away with doing anything they want to do while the cops go after the out of state people.

Anyhow, in the few times that I have been through their court system beating speeding tickets, I vaguely remember that if you get convicted in traffic court for reckless driving then it automatically goes to an appeal unless you plead guilty right off the bat. And in the appeals process, because they consider reckless driving to be a felony, they will require that you have an attorney. And if you cannot afford one, they will force you to sell your car, you house, or any other personal assets before they will allow you to proceed in the process.

17 years old at the time, 8:00 at night, cruise set at 45 in a 30, County sheriff pulls me over for 60 in a 30. $175 ticket and 3 mo. court supervision and that was that

You didn't try to tell the cop you was doing 45?

Really? so if I got caught going 90+ (I never drive that fast though... *eyes shift*). I could be charged with a felony...here in California?

Thank God for my V1. :D

He asked me if I knew how fast I was going, and I said 45, and he said 60:crazy:

I've only had one cop do that to me. Propoply because he seen a 16year old in a hot muscle car, and thought it would be easy to give me a ticket.

Here in AZ now anything 85+ is consider felony speeding. A lot of freeway/highways around here are 75mph speed limit so if you feel like doing the normal ~10 over it's fairly easy to be busted big time.
