Auto's have their place offroad. Esp if they have descent control Smoother delivery of power. If you need speed at the bottom of a hill climb, and torque at the steeper top section, no need to compromise in your gear selection as the change is usually smooth enough on the auto with little or no interruption in power.
Also better for same reasons on sand. You DO NOT want to stop to change gear on loose sand.
Manuals have their advantages too of course and I run manual in my offroader.
I'd love to turn up to a meet in that - just for a point of interest.
