Hi, I'm New; Who Has a Carbon Fiber Hood?

Hi, I'm active on other BMW lists and forums, but new here. Our current 2 E30s are our 5th and 6th BMWs. No, we don't still own the other 4.

I was sent here by someone who said that some of you have carbon fiber hoods. I'd be interested in hearing your experiences with them.

I'm not really into CF all that much, but it occurred to me that a CF hood might be less expensive than having mine painted. It has that common Delphin Gray clear coat delamination. I'm sure several of you know what I mean. Anyway, unless I get a crappy re-paint that will peel again in a couple of years, decent paint at Bay Area labor rates is gonna cost a bunch, thus my question.

    All feedback welcome.

Most people who buy carbon fiber hoods buy them from a company called VIS. They sell a lot of their products on eBay actually. However, fitment has apparentley been an issue with the VIS hoods; they're known to be a tiny bit small. But most people buy CF hoods don't buy them for looks, but rather weight-reduction. There is a guy with a s/n "BierBrennerE30" that has a CF hood. You could email or PM him.

I've seen Mike's M3 with the VIS hood, and regardless of the fitment (which seemed good enough to me, far better than any glass hood) it was beautiful. I'd ditch my hood for a CF one in a heartbeat, it's chipped and dented anyway ;)

Yes, I have one, it came from VIS, the cost was around $500.
The fit is good except the passenger corner dips in about 1/4in.

Hmmmz, is seems like fit with a ViS hood is a hit or miss proposition. Some say fit it pretty good, some say not so good. I'm also concerned with their customer service policies, per their e-Bay ad. I'm probably overly-paranoid, but I have visions of getting a defective product and having to go through something worse than escrow to get it corrected.

I've contacted CDOC based on info from a board member, but they don't currently list CF hoods on their web site. Any other companies worth considering?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

I'm looking into one in the very near future. Anyone have pics of the specifics of installation, as well as some of a finished job? On a white car would help tons.

Those that complain about the VIS are being picky. THe problem is that the passenger side tends to bubble up high and then dip in the rear corner. After adjusting the mounting points on the car, the hood fits much better than when i first installed it. It still dips but it's barely noticable and there's less fender gap on the passenger side thanks to the front height adjustment.
