I've seen both of those systems and was impressed by the SMT6. You get more with the split second but it seems to be less powerful since it cannot tune ignition and some of the users are complaining about drivability. The SMT6 is also way cheaper vs split second but you have to put together your own "MAF conversion" kit.

once the split second is dialed in though, you'll never need to touch it again. Don't get it from BMPD either. Save your cash and get it directly from Split Second.
Once your SMT6 is in, you don't have to mess with it either. In fact, they make branded SMT6s that can't be messed with.
I personally have run the SMT6 in an '87 325is and an '86 Porsche 928S... no problems in either setup. I would reccomend it to anyone. I was also one of the first to perform the MAF conversion on my 325is.
