    91 318is or 84/85

so my buddy wants to club race, he is wondering which is a better buy...the 91s or 84/85?

    pros / cons

i know the weight and power/tq ......anything else ?

you're going to have to replace EVERYTHING on the 84/85. And I don't just mean wear items - there are things specific to early cars that aren't compatible with the rest of the E30 aftermarket.

I'd just go with the 91.

mileage doesn't matter so much. the 84/85 has smaller struts, drum brakes and other stuff that you don't want. you can replace all of it if you want but it's easier to start with car that has that stuff already.

Hands down the 91... Newer technology motor, rear disk, sport seats, extremely well balanced.

Unless your going to build a full race car, rip apart a 84.

There seems to be gross misinformation on the 84-85 cars. All suspension pieces are the same as the later 325 cars. That means any strut inserts, shocks, brake rotors, diff, etc. are interchangeable. Any aftermarket suspension you want will bolt on. The older "e" cars run ITA in SCCA, and MP in BMWCCA. They also run GTS2 in NASA, but the newer 91 car runs ITS and is not competitive, Period.

IF you have a good straight body the earlier makes a very competitive race car. Chuck

              He's talking 318i, me thinks.

They had drum brakes in the rear and smaller struts up front. I'm not sure about it having ABS either.

That doesn't mean shit. He and I were pointing out that the 84/85 318i's are far behind the "raceability" of ANY E30 325. If you're going to get a 318i then get a '91 iS

8v 4cyl, drum brakes, thinner front struts and solid non vented front rotors FTW! :p

What's the plan though, will you be taking everything and replacing it ? If so, then I vote an early car, less stuff, less weight.
