Swing wild, brake later, don't apologize.

91 definitely. Just because their running doesn't mean their the best choice.

what are you going to do with the car?

91 318is 135hp, 130ftlbs 2750lbs. Cost more, cheap to maintain, costly to make fast [relative], and hard to find.

84 318i 110hp, 100ftlbs 2400lbs. Cheap, easy to find, easy to improve, no real power, cheap to maintain, rear drum brakes [work fine]

Calipers and rotors can be switched over, smaller front strut tube, rear brakes can be retrofitted.

ITA , I believe ITA allows aftermarket suspension and wheels

Im not too sure about the restrictions on brakes

he wants to have fun and enjoy the club race experience , he doesnt need a 300hp monster.

                his choices are 84/85 318i 325e or the 91iS

but true the 84/85 cars have parts readily available at the salvage yards so thats a plus.

Im creating this post for him, im more of a S14B23 type of guy ;)

the brake conversion for the rear just isn't worth it if you ask me (I'm doing it)
unless you save like a grand or more on the car, 85s are older so I'm having to deal with rust through floor boards, scrapyards and such its sooooo much fun.
I don't think your mom appreciates the value of those modifications

where did you get 2750lbs? that's more like 325i territory. I'd be surprised if any 318is weighed more than 2600.
