    Get up and go..

So I'm curious to see the warm up process that members on here go through when turning on a cold E30.

Myself, I like to let it sit for a minute or two, get atleast a thousand engine revolutions before I take off, but sometimes that isn't the case: sometimes i have to start up and go right away..

Do most of you warm your car up for a while, and then take off(start driving), or do you just turn it on and baby it on the street.

Of course I baby it on the street, but sometimes i need to put it in gear seconds after starting it up(if i'm late for something).

Driving the car right away shouldn't be too bad if you go easy until it warms up, but I still like to wait a minute or so before I move.

I turn the key with it at WOT. :D

In all seriousness I don't give it any warm up time. I just drive easy until it has fully warmed up.

X2...........It gives a chance for the trans/diff get warmed up together along with the engine, easy driving of course. Letting it sit for 10 - 15 mins is bad...

I redline it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. After a minute or so it is warm.

I usually wait until the RPMS drop to idle, and then I don't drive hard until it's fully warmed up. I try not to redline it until my oil temps come up, usually about when the pressure starts dropping at idle. After that I'll bounce off the 7k tach all day long :p

Usually wait about 1 minute give or take. Then baby until temps are up. I don't think long idling is very good, plus the quickest way to heat up the engine is to drive it.

I like to let it idle for a minute or two, then go easy until oil temp is up-which takes a looong time.

After that I try and hit that ever-elusive 19,000rpm.

There's no real need to let your car warm up, shit I won't even agree with this "waiting for the oil to warm up" thing. That said, I usually hop in and go, only take it to 3k or so.

                    I have a confession..

I always play "ooh baby-baby /push it" by Salt-n-Pepa. Let it idle then go the rear and stroke the tailpipes some to make sure they're good & warmed up too.

                    j/k !!!

I drive off easy and never exceed 2 ½ K in any gear.

my car has always had an idle issue at start up i have never taken the time to figure out. so when i start it up cold it jumps around a bit and then when it finally settles down i get on my way, taking it easy until its "warmed up"

I believe it used to be thought that letting an engine idle to warm up before driving it was the correct thing to do, but in recent years, mechanics have found driving the car is much better then letting it sit. Something about the varying RPMS is better then staying at one constant RPM.

Now, that's not to say you should redline the engine when cold, but driving is fine.

I usually just give the engine a bit of time to get oil circulating everywhere and then take off. That way I don't put stress on anything that isn't lubricated.

usually turn it on and go. Drive easy for the first 5 min to let fluids circulate never going over 2.5-3k rps.

...you know and this is what sucks nowadays. I believe all (correct me if i''m wrong) new BMWs no longer have an coolant temperature gauge.

I drove a Hyundai earlier this year with a little "cold" light that would go off just after approx 2 mins. Wouldnt want a premium car with such a system

I think you mean coolant temp gauge. That's okay, because from the E36 up they're basically dummy lights anyway :p

I don't believe in letting it sit and idle until it warms up completely, for one thing that would seriously take over half an hour. But at least give the oil a little bit of time to circulate and the O2 sensor to warm up.. 30 seconds to a minute is not a long time.
