    Driving in snow

I am planning on making a few trips up snowboarding this summer in my car. I have some all season tires on my car and am somewhat nervous driving rwd in low temperatures with possible snow. I know snow tires are ideal, but do you think all seasons will be alright?

You may get around, but i'll tell you this - after two winters on allseasons in the e30, i got some decent snow tires last season. I was out-handling, braking, and accelerating 4x4s, SUVs, quattros, subies, and just about anything without tank treads... never once did I get crossed up (unless I was trying) nor did I get stuck. I'll have proper snow tires on every car I ever own from now on.

All seasons can work, just be careful in corners. But ur driving a 318iS which technically should handle less twitchy than a 325i.

I also don't have winter tires (financial limitations)

RWD's do fine in the snow. The first year i got my firebird, i drove it that winter. And it's a 300+hp car.

It will handle snow, but not when its dumping. Just buy chains.

Just to echo what's been said above, good traction tires or chains will do you just fine. On top of that, get a couple of 50-75 lb. sandbags to put in the trunk, the added ballast over the rear wheels will greatly improve handling in the snow and ice. My wife drove her 89 325i for 2 snow seasons with studded tires and 2 sandbags in the trunk, and it drove just fine.

+1. My dad told me to do that and common consensus is that it works.

Snow tires are more fun. Cough up for a decent set. It will actually let you stop & steer the car.

snows are much better but all seasons work. just take your time, allow plenty of distance for stopping, and dont panic. that and you have ABS to help you out.

If you are not sure, have someone else drive or borrow a car.

you aren't going to get very far on all seasons... snow tires + bottlecaps are cheap as hell, I see no reason why you couldn't get a set.

last winter I drove a 318is on several inches of compacted snow and ice for 2 weeks - so slick you literally couldn't even stand on the road without sliding towards the shoulder. but with snow tires I was doing circles around all the FWD hondas and other POS cars - they probably had all seasons. :p

also, ABS is going to make it WORSE with regular tires. Because you're going to have no grip at all, the ABS computer is basically going to freak out and you'll get no braking power at all.
