I am plotting a set of 16" or 17" wheels (probably 16's though) and wanted opinion's on wheel weight, and if there is a "magical" number not to exceed. When does too much weight start to become a problem performance/ handling-wise? The wheels I am looking at range from 17-24lbs/ wheel. Any recommendations based on knowledge, and or personal experience would be great. Thanks!

See if you can get your hands on some Kosei K-1s in 16", if you're worried about weight.
Rota also makes some good-looking wheels that'll work, in higher offset (40mm) - you'll need spacers.
There are other options, but you're gonna be lookin' at $$, as always. Plenty of wheelmakers cater to the Japanese imports, but their wheels can be chintzy. Generally, you get what you pay for...
You'll feel 24lbs wheels, for sure. 16" E36 Sport Package wheels (7" wide) are 19lbs - that's probably about as heavy as you'd want to go, on an E30, certainly not much more.
