Personally, I don't see the elimination of pit stops ever occuring. In many people's opinions, that is one of the best parts of Formula One. Take them out of the equation and you not only have fewer employees, but also fewer fans.

I'm not for the outright elimination, just the removal of fuel stops. Hell, mandate the "option" tire as the only rubber, and watch the strategy unfold from there. See who can manage a tire that falls off quickly, who can stay out and who has to lose time in the pits.

Well, I guess we all have our own views of Formula One. I personally like there being more than one variable needed for a driver to win. It's not only a fast/reliable car, but you need to judge your tire choice accordingly, you need to have the correct fuel load, you have to figure out if you will run one or two stops. I like that. Like many have said, it seems that Bernie wants to level the playing field COMPLETELY. Fuck that and fuck him.

Pit stop strategy has been a huge element on how F1 races are won... or lost. So, no fuelling, maybe no tire change. All cars on the same engine and tranny. If it is all about the drivers then, let's just ditch the expensive cars and make them run with their legs...

Refueling didn't come into play until the early 90's. Up until then, the cars ran the race on one fuel load, so this isn't really a new thing. Given all the nightmares caused by the "no tire change" rule a few years back, I don't see that going into play. I think Bernie likes his "option tire" gimmick too much as is.

As for "same engine & tranny", go back & read up on F1 from '70-'79. You had a field full of cosworths and a Ferrari. It's considered by many to be the "pinnacle" of F1, and man, that situation sure looked "spec" to me.

Frankly, I hate the "fuel load" game. Having races come down to whether someone takes 6.2 vs 6.9 seconds of fuel and crap like that.

Weak....this is just as bad as the no tire change rule from a couple seasons back. Pit strategy re: fuel load and tires is a fundamental aspect of F1. I cannot wait until someone else takes the reins of the sport after Bernie's wife cleans him out after the divorce.

On a brighter note, what do you think of the turbo 4-banger engines making a possible return to F1?

F1 is supposed to be the PINNACLE of ALL MOTORSPORT. The PEAK of TECHNOLOGY in a racing machine.

Turning it into a spec class goes against the entire founding objectives of F1. It's fucking stupid. Really fucking stupid.

There are PLENTY of series that are based around having the same car and it being down to the driver, F1 should NOT be one those series.

It might be worth re-reading my original post, it seems both us have similar sentiments on what Formula One should be.

F that. as it is now, the chassis for the Sauber car is not a BMW, and so by having a non BMW engine, might as well pull the badges off. It realy sucks that F1 has to go this rout.

I guess that the world wide economics are a great excuse that will allow teams to widthdraw without hurting Bernie's sensibility. Teams have lost the North America exposure, and now Brnie wants to enforce engine rules that won't let teams to promote their brand.

I completely agree with you on this - the very core fundamentals which F1 was built on would be cast to the wind if this whole series is turned into a glorified spec venue. However, in the light of what the current state of the economies is doing to the financial vitality of Formula 1, the recent agreement made for Cosworth to provide spec drivetrains at a greatly reduced cost may be what this sport needs right now. It can be a "rule" that is put in place for a few years until economies around the globe regain some stability - then revert back to more individualized cars. What I fear is that if nothing is done soon, other teams may be bowing out of the sport. Toyota is already eyeing a return to LeMans in a few years, the Williams' team isn't exactly flush with cash and with Red Bull recently taking control over their junior team, how long can they afford to run four cars?

I'm glad the playing field has been been levelled, it's great to see that McMerc and SF aren't the only teams in serious contention of the Constructor's WC, but it almost seems that the playing field is too level (if that makes any sense.) They're on the same tires, with the same drivetrains, and similar but not identical aero packages.

Now, it is all about the driver's ability, the teams can't advance because of the new regulations, so for the next ten years (or however long this engine freeze lasts,) it will be the same Formula One as last season, and the season before that, and the season before that, etc. etc. Zero advancement kind of takes away some of the lunacy that is modern-day Formula One.

Just my thoughts though, but it will be interesting to see how different the 2010 season will be in comparison to the 2008 season.
