Becuase while I'm not concerned with tons of horsepower, an M10 is way less than I would like to have. I'd really like to just find a nice condition 325es or late model 325i. late model 325i preferably, since I would rather have plastic bumpers. But if I find a nice 325e or eS, I'll probably go with that. I want the 6 cylinder.
For someone who still has 1/2 year without a license, the '84 318i should be an option to consider. You can find one in nice condition for very cheap, and you have a lot more options, such as throwing in an M20, M30, M42, M50, turbo M10, etc.... changing to plastic bumpers, euro bumpers, etc

It would be a good project that in 6 months could look a LOT different and be a lot more powerful, something that could please you.

However, on the other side..... you did crash your car only a few weeks after you got the extra 40hp, so maybe a 170hp car isnt what you want to begin with.

It's all up to you though, I personally like the M10 idea.

I've got all the parts to make a sick 84 318i; vented front rotors, 51mm struts, rear discs, plastic bumpers, etc. 8)

Let's drive fast and have fun.

You do have a point there, but I don't want to spend a ton of money getting the car to stock late-model E30 standards. I would really like to start off with just a base-model 325i, 89-or newer. That way I already have the plastic bumpers, and I don't have to worry about converting things over like brakes, bumpers, rear apron, stuff like that.

And as far as wrecking my car after getting all that extra hp, you are totally right. As soon as I get my license back, I am going to do a performance driving school, and really learn how to control my car, because it's evident that I really didn't know how before. I also want to autocross, they have them every weekend here from April to August.

I've decided that I'm going to keep saving as much money as I can until after I get my license back, possibly until the spring after the snow is gone, unless a really good deal comes along in the meantime. I want to be able to have enough money to buy the car I really want, not just jump on what "looks" like a good deal, or settle on something that is less than what I want.
