I've been in one @ 140kph! they are definetly rear engine rear wheel drive.

my fiancee has a 08 Gti and i really like the little car.

If i were to buy a brand new car i'd be buying a jetta wagon TDI

or a mini clubman diesel if they ever bring them to the states.

then the E30 would strikly be for fun (as it is now)

now the new 123d is a much nicer car for the money!
and yes, Smarts are rear wheel drive- and are also garbage for everyday- not comfortable and zero room for anything- worse than a single cab pick-up in the rain

...Not to mention that the only tranny availiable on U.S. smart cars is an automated manual 5-speed that is worse than the 1st-gen SMG on e36s....

My vote would probably be one of the aforementioned Saab 9000 Aeros. Hella fun cars with a 5-speed ;)
