If its your money, slap your dad across the face with it and say "listen here honkey, I am getting a 5 speed and you will like it".

I practically grew up a BMW shop and I've noticed a few things. The ZF automatics in E30/E28's have a reputation for slipping, not shifting or having certain gears go out, the Getrag 5 speeds on the other hand are very reliable.
"I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

Manuals are cheaper to repair than autos.

First post from a newbie from over the pond. Have had 2 E30's and E21 before that. First a 323ia from new in 1985 and did 277,000 miles on the same box. Upgraded the engine to 2.7 litres and it was still happy. Changed to a 325ia Sport and swopped the 2.7 lump into it plus lots of tuning mods. Now has 227ft lbs of torque and circa 230bhp. The sports auto box works just great but you have to DRIVE it. No good leaving it in drive all day. Hold the gears and you can have 85mph in second, 125 in third and I'm still waiting to find out about fourth. I track the car regularly and it is probably more fun than a manual. Much more anticipation and skill required.
By the way I'm an extremely hetrosexual ex marine and a grandfather but I'm sure the ladies and gays can have just as much fun in an E30. 8)

Yup. The first thing the Fab5 would do is Schnitzer up the interior, ICE the crap out of it, and add angel eyes.

Automatics are for homosexuals, end of discussion.

Shifting an automatic is even gayer than owning one.

Friendly forum you've got here. The guys and gals in the UK said I would have a laugh when I looked it. Done that, got abused, so won't be doing that anymore! See ya.
