What is going on w/ my monitor?

I'm talking about the colored pixelation shown in my sig (this is a screenshot from my monitor).

My monitor is getting progressively worse at this, but only in the last 1-2 days. Certain images, including my desktop, are developing these areas of colored pixelation. They are mostly blue, green or yellow. On images on web pages, the more I scroll the image up and and down, the more pixelation occurs. It also happens on my desktop if I open a window and close it, there is a patch of the colored pixelation behind it when I close it.

I removed my graphics card in the device manager, and when I restarted the computer, it was fine until my system found the card and re-installed it, and then the problem was back.

Does this mean that my GPU is going bad? Should I replace it? And if I do and the problem remains, what then?

If it stopped when you removed the video card from the device manager it sounds like the graphics driver is conflicting with somthing. Try downloading an updated driver for you video card.

      Does the cooling fan work?
      Heatsink clogged with dust?
I would add corrupt memory to the list of suspects in which case the card is forever lost in computer history.

same thing is happening to me. and it started when i had to replace my moniter. i installed new moniter drivers. althouh, i dont think they are working correctly. my guess for you is to find updated drivers for both video and your moniter. and if you have already done that, then mabye your moniter is getting "dead pixels". with dead pixels u can recieve a new moniter if u have a warentee

If you can take a screen shot of it.. it is most obviously not your monitor.

You have hardware failure, most likely a video card.

I'm curious.. Is your monitor a flat+thin TFT/LCD and not a regular bulky cathode ray type monitor? Do you feed it using analog RGB (DVI-A using DVI-connector or D-SUB 15-pin connector) or using DVI-D (digital DVI) ? Do I make any sense to non-tech folk? No.

What I mean is that depending on the resolution of your desktop, a DVI-D (pure digital) can consume enough bandwidth to cause problems with pixelation. But that is usually seen as "snow" across the screen, usually with white pixels fluttering about.

I would dump the video card unless it was under warranty.

like jordan said, you can't screen capture bad pixels or snow on your monitor.. the memory on your video card is either toast or its getting too hot.. try cooling it down first, if it doesn't go away you need to replace the card. :(

                Not necessarily.

If you have onboard video on your motherboard, switch to that and see if it cures the problem.

Try re-seating the video card (pull it out of its slot and reinsert it). If there's a bad connection in the AGP or PCI slot, that will usually cure it. Make sure to blow the slot out first with compressed or canned air.

Try reinstalling the drivers, or updating to the latest from your manufacturer. This doesn't seem to be the problem, but systems can do some peculiar things when the wrong drivers are installed.

And don't forget the simple ones; cleaning any dust off of it, letting it cool down, and reconnecting the monitor cable.

If it continues, chances are you've either got bad memory, or the processor on the video card itself is gone, and it's new video card time. May I recommend the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro... new toy in my gaming machine. Great stuff.

Your monitor is fine, though, as Jordan said. You can't screencap bad pixels.[/url]

This is actually very good news, because for one, my comp has been locking up at random lately like crazy, and this is most likely why.

I've also been looking for a good reason to buy another video card...

Random lockups are OFTEN attributed to bad RAM. You should swap yours out for some known good sticks before buying a new video card.

Shaddap... The constant lock-ups were the only real problem I was having, and now the pixelation thing. Both signs that are attributed to a video card going bad.
Other than that, this thing runs pretty well.

This video card is old, it was given to me. My friend got rid of it when bought a new one, and he said he wasn't sure how long it was going to last,
and that it had been acting a little twitchy from time to time.
