Questions to those with a 318is : what kinda gas ?

So when I got it I filled up with a 89, but then afterwards I noticed that BMW receommends premium (91?) on the 318is.

Do all of you actually put in premium or higher in the car, or just use regular 87 or 89 ?

With the gas prices now, I'd probably save $5 each time I fill with a 87, but if there's a reason why only the 318is needs premium, i wouldnt cheap out on gas.

My car had detonation on the dyno with 87 octane, so run at least 89 to be on the safe side. If you have a chip, definately run premium

mine was chipped, so i used 91.

i would only put 87 in a rental car.

The octane numbers in europe are different than in the USA. In europe they use RON and in the USA we use PON. 91 RON = 87 PON. Thus, the manual states to not use anything lower than 87 octane here in the USA.

I think 87 is the lowest you can get... but I run 93 without a doubt

91.. the M42 has a fairly high compression ratio (10.1:1 or something). even stock you'll get detonation if you run cheap gas. contrast that with the M20's 8.8:1 ratio...

I guess my dads M3 is supposed to run on 87 then too? I know they're different, but they do call for premium.

your dads car would probably be fine on 87.....modern ECUs have knock sensors that pull timing when knock is detected, preventing engine damage. Our cars, not so much.

I've run 89 a couple of times due to the high prices and haven't noticed any negative effects.

i run a 98RON. which is about equivalent to a 91 in the US books. run a bit of octane bost every now and then. cleans the injectors out a bit if nothing else.
