Sweet new diesel coming from GM

It's not often a design comes along and truly thinks outside of the box. What would you say to a GM developed, 4.5L V8 turbo diesel putting down 310 horsepower and 520 lb.ft. of torque in the footprint of a small block 350? What if we told you that same engine has common rail injection, a variable geometry turbo, no intake manifolds, and the exhaust ports on the valley side? Crazy! Yes - crazy good.

Not a BMW but this is an interesting design. A lot of GM cars may be crap but they are putting out some decent engines lately. I like the fact that they finally did something smart with the turbo setup on a 'V' engine. Now if they can just get it to get 25mpg in a full size 4x4 pickup they will really see a turnaround.

    Old news lol

should be fairly close to the 25mpg mark in a 1/2 ton app. if you can keep you foot outta the turbo. Hell if I stay off the turbo an play with the throttle on the highway I get 17-18mpg with mine (unloaded of cource) not bad for a 3/4 ton.

Not only do i like it because how its designed.... its a 4.5 liter. not a 6 liter or bigger.... and puts out ok numbers for that stock tune.

I was up above it, Now I'm down in it ~ Entropy - A Build thread.

But still big steamy piles of crap. GM diesels have had the worst rep since the late 70's with all their non caucaisan modified gas engines. the 5.7l the 6.2 and 4.3 olds v6 all just gas engines made to work on diesel.

But the duramax is the best on the market (cummings is close second) the 4.5L DOHC version is all GM, No isuzu this time as GM has sold off its stake in them.

I think a Diesel Tahoe will be in the future for the little woman.

Where have you been getting your dope? My pop's turbo 5.7 has been the best thing we've ever owned in diesel.

Edit: Sorry for the double post, but I have worked on GM diesels for 14 years. I have a hard time suffering fools.

Funny you must of had a fluke then because the 5.7 diesel was a car engine an never got a turbo as far as I know. My Grandpa had 2 6.2's 1 dropped a rod out the bottom of the oil pan pulling a empty hay wagon out of the barn an the other split the crank at the 2 and 5 rod journal idling in the drive way. My dad and a buddy of mine both lost a 6.2 due to a rod failure one pulling away from a stop light an the other at idle. All of these engines had less than 100k an good upkeep. After all that we have stayed away till the current duramax.

The 6.5td is allright but not a great diesel. I do see them running around all over the palce with all kinds of miles they just dont have alot of grunt as dose the 6bt or the powerchoke of the same time period. and they just sound like they are about to fall apart at the drop of a hat I never got over that with any of the past GM diesel's and I am a huge GM fan an form GM family. there are 2 odd balls in our family my E30 an my grandparents Pacifica (sp).

BMW already did the turbo in the valley deal.

                    Keep it slideways!!

Ever heard of this little thing called modding? We took the turbo off of a Case tractor. 450K miles, and one set of head gaskets, which is why it isn't on the road right now.

i think the cummins is a way better motor than the diapermax. the chevy has the allison transmission, which is by far the superior tranny. cummins + allison would be the ultimate light duty diesel setup.
