I just looked at the 1989 e30 that I mentioned, and I got to drive it. It drives solid, suspension feels good and tight. Hard to get a full evaluation since i couldn't leave the gravel lot (and as much as I wanted to, I didn't do any gravel donuts). Engine feels strong. It does have some oil seepage around the valve cover. There is some valve clatter also, I hope this isn't anything to worry about.
It needs a few things, but overall it was in good shape. It has a manual sunroof. It was rainy and I'm in my work clothes, so there was no way I could check for an LSD.
Stuff it needs:
- front roundel emblem
- kidney grilles are bent/out of place, need adjustment or replacement
- glove box and plastic panel under drivers side dash
- button on ebrake is recessed into handle?
- drivers side rear window no worky
-it stalled when I was parking in reverse, I was braking and the a/c defogger was on, the engine idle just felt like it got overwhelmed
For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to lock the doors... where is the power lock button? I tried putting a key in the lock from the outside, that didn't work either.
going down your checklist.
-roundel is like 10 bucks new
-kidneys are available for ~20 used but it might just be missing the metal clips
-a good glove box goes for 50-75 used probably, 25-50 for a nice knee panel
-unless the button is actually stuck, probably the rubber handle covering just shimmied its way towards the end and you can push it back down. If you can take your finger or a pen or something and push it in the hole and the ratchet disengages then its just the handle being out of place.
-window could be switch or motor. All of the window switches are the same so you can swap them between known working ones and the drivers rear and see if thats the problem, and switches are cheap if you need one.
There's no power lock button, locking any 1 door should unlock all of them. if they are working independently there's probably something up with the lock module which is down in the drivers kick panel near your left leg.
Valve noise is somewhat normal on these cars, the 325's all have solid lifters. Chances are that the car needs a new timing belt, which is easy enough to do. As far as the locking goes, some of the cars (contrary to popular belief) did not come with central locking, but this is pretty rare. If there is a locking pin for the gas cap filler door, it has central locking and you probably would need a new locking module. If the price is good, go for it! ;)
