pre 91' the motor. I believe that 91/92 4 door 318's had an m42 but I could be wrong. Other 318's had the m10 motor (which is what you have based on your sig), and the 91's had the m42. M42 is dual cam, and makes a lot more power than your m10. M10 is dead-nuts reliable though...

Also - I know you're new... but try and search a little bit so that questions like this that have been answered a million times don't get asked again. Bump an old thread if you have to.

In the US (speaking for late models) a 318i is a four door, and a 318is is the two door that was available in 1991.

So what exactly are the differences between a 325e and 325i? Why do some models have an “s”, like a 318is, 325es, and 325is? Is the ’84-’85 318i the same as the ’91 31…

It's weird how I said the same thing as I clicked this thread.

                    According to this:

                    318i's from 83-86 got the M10, 318i's in Europe from 87-94 got the M40, and 318's from 89-91 got the M42.

So basically, in the US, i's got M10's, is's got M42's.

                    Were there no 87-88 318's?

Haha great you just muddied up the waters for the noobs . :D

US only had 84-86 318i's and there was no "IS" version , they all had big bumpers and SOHC M10 engine .

In 90' the 4-door 318i sedan was offered and in 91' we got the 2 door 318is as well , both had plastic bumpers and the DOHC M42 engine .

The 318ic cabrios were available from 91-93 with plastic bumpers and the M42 .
