Wishful thinking. Why? If it's because they could have gotten an M3 for about the same price, and the M3's are worth so much more now, I don't think they would regret it. For those who do still have their cars since new, especially 91 verts, they obviously chose it for a reason, so maybe they don't care?
Thats fucking awesome.

Well, Mariano, it's not quite wishful thinking, I was just rather thinking of a possibility. Reason being, I simply couldn't care less if anybody or everybody who bought an IC back then regretted getting it over an M3. I'm too young to be one of those first hand original owners (and I would DEFINITELY opt for an M3 myself), but you know that. Infact, I'm almost exactly two years younger than you are. I'm sure some people kicked their ass over it. Others may not have.
When I bought my car, I wanted an 89 IS, or any GOOD condition i or IS for that matter, and for whatever reason I couldn't find one I liked at the time. Ended up with my IC, sometimes I wish I had found what I was originally looking for, and other times I am happy with my ultimate decision.
Now, back to the subject of those who bought the cars new. Come to think of it, for those who bought it just as a status symbol or who just decided to dump the car after a couple or few years they would feel the impact of the price difference harder than those who would be selling equal cars today. Less time with the car, with more of a depreciation. Selling it now, even if its about only a third to a fifth of a price of a fairly well maintained M3, the reason I said they may not care is because they've had the car so long they would have expected the depreciation anyway. They also may feel they have gotten the most out of the money depreciated possible. Granted, they could have had an m3 and lost a lot less money over the years till now, and it would be more cool, but not everybody expected such a return on it.
Edit - Personally, I would have been kinda pissed. I was acting as the devils advocate above, but then again like I said, if I was 20 years older than I am now and had the money available back then, I'd certainly have picked the M3 over anything else to begin with :DComment

Mine in 86 retailed for 23,400. I wish mine still had the original pearl beige leather interior with sport seats. Some where in it's life it ended up with black vinyl interior swapped.
