The M Coupe diff bushing is a nice upgrade but I cant truthfully say that I notice a difference between a new M Coupe bushing and a torn stock bushing. :?
Have you compared the z3 lever to the z4 one? I compared them a few days ago (Jordan has the z3 and I have the z4), and I like the z4 much better. It's probably twice as short; and I love how the knob sits much lower. And with your UUC knob it should be enough weight to make shifting smoother.
Yowza, that's a lot of work to do. It will be like driving a completely different car when you're done.
Ditto on what nando said on the diff bushing. I don't have a urethane one, but it's hard to imagine a bushing being stiffer than the stock one, unless it's just in REALLY poor shape. I checked mine on at 250,000 miles and it's still VERY solid.
Have fun with all of those projects. As much as I love the look of your car now, I'm curious to see it afterwards.
So have you been saving for all of this by working? Or had you just had the money sitting around because all of that will cost a pretty penny, just curious.
Parting out another E30 is paying for almost all of it. I also have a sponsor for my car now so I am getting stuff pretty cheap.
Rob, thanks for the advice on the Azenis, I think you are right.
Werksmini, my sponsor already ordered my bar, thanks though.
Nando and all, I agree with the diff bushing, it was just a thought. The bushing on the 4.10 looks fine to me, I will leave it as it is.
Ken, I have compared the levers. The Z4 2.5 sits lower that the Z3 1.9, but it has longer throws. The Z4 3.0 has much shorter throws and sits lower. I think they sit too low, and from what I heard they are a bitch to shift. I've ever heard of people having a hard time finding gears. I am not dead set on a Z3 lever, but the Z4 3.0 doesn't seem that appealing to me.
Beej, yeah, it's going to be so different I won't even recognize it. I am not worried about the aethetic mods really, I just need a lip badly and my throwing stars need paint anyways. Here is a Photoshop job.
TJ, I've had the Z4 3.0 lever in for months now, and I have yet to miss a shift or get lost in the gates. It's very precise, and really doesn't require much more effort than stock. People are just exaggerating, I think. Hell I even did my first auto-x yesterday and had to shift 1-2 and 2-1 repeatedly, and despite being new to the entire sport still hit the gears perfectly.
I've never had trouble finding gears with the Z4 lever. In fact, I think it's easier to find the gears with the z4 than the stock lever. And I don't know where the lever got such a bad rap for being difficult to shift; notchy: yes difficult: no. And with your UUC knob it should be much smoother than my stock leather one. Everyone that has sat in my car and tried it out has loved it and wanted to get one. After using the z4 lever, every other lever the z3 just seems so sloppy. You may as well buy one and try it out; if you don't like it you'll have no trouble selling it.
Well first off, my girlfriend bought me a tranny swap kit for my birthday/one year anniversary. So I've got a Getrag 260 etc. etc. sitting in my garage already.......... * 5 speed conversion with a new clutch kit, lightened flywheel, new center support bearing, guibo, tranny mounts, shift linkage.
Stephanie is kick ass. Lucky man.
And FINALLY, you get that damn third pedal! 8)
Sounds sweet TJ. Good luck.
And if you are going to bolt on shit eventually, I'd say M30 AFM, 19#, heatshielded intake, shorty headers, and 2.5" single pipe out to the muffler. Don't get too crazy, that should be a good mix.
part of the reason I ditched my z4 3.0 was that I couldnt snag gears as fast as I'd like when loads on the car were high. Its great around town, but when I was hustling, it got annoying. I'm very happy with the z3 1.9. Its short enough to shift quickly, but there's enough leverage that keeps things from getting too stiff. A new set of tranny mounts would probably have helped, but oh well.
I'm not sure which clutch kit you are thinking of buying, but I would stick with the stock one for now. You only need a perofrmance clutch if you are going to be making some nice power i.e. +40hp over stock. That's definately an approximate number so don't quote me. Also, if you are new to driving a manual (wasn't sure so don't take it as an insult, just disregard if you aren't) the stock clutch takes less effort and would be easier to learn on than a heavy performance clutch. Just some food for thought...
