I normally just prefer to not drive like a complete Jackass on public roads.

It's much cheaper over the "long haul".

you guys... there is a switch to slow down without lighting up the brake lights. Learn to downshift+ pull e brake. If you don't rip it to full lock it isn't going to just seize up. Hold button down and pull on it then let off once you're slowed down. That plus a gear down and you can drop speed at the same rate as if you panic braked seeing a light bar on a car ahead of the pack. Learn to drive, get a radar detector, and pay attention to your surroundings.

Otherwise, do the speed limit. These are simple concepts

Your missing a quote...If you're talking about radar detectors, they are in like 2 states, laser jammers in more, but not all.

wrong. Any "jammer" 1 doesn't work and you wasted money like an assbag on a phony product, and 2 if it does work, the only way to scramble or "block" radar is to emit a counter signal to match the original signal, and the whole supreme court ruling I mentioned, you can legally detect when they are using fancy gizmo's on you but you can't block them. Nevermind any of this since most "radar jammers" have been tested and do nothing. If you have one, take it apart and you'll find little more than a weight inside a little black box.

Laser or radar jammers are absolutely 50 states illegal, whereas radar/laser detectors are 48 states legal. And the guy was probably talking about his post about the laptop with police tracking software being a $500 ticket by the way.

I've just trained myself to slow down when ever I see anything resembling a crown vic. I love the new police bikes that have the blue and red LED panel on the back end of them, you can pick those things out from so far away at night. I normally just go 8 or less over the speed limit on 40-45mph speed limit roads and then on the freeway I flow with traffic. Earlier today everybody driving on the 51 was going 15 over and a sheriff in an Expedition flew by in the fast lane and did his own thing.

I almost never see squad cars pulled into side streets gunning people, occasionally on a weekend late at night but other then that they just drive around. We have those stupid ass radar cameras on the 101 though and there's a few photo radar cars that they randomly park on the side of the different freeways that do the same thing. Our governor wants to have something like 180 more cameras installed..damn that woman.

I haven't been pulled over before *knocks on wood* so I'm happy. Although I did piss off some old sheriff in an old Dodge Ram highway patrol truck (I wasn't sure if he was a cop I'd never seen a patrol truck) and he told me to roll my window down at the next light on his loudspeaker and then told me to go the speed limit or he'd give me a ticket. I wasn't even speeding I just got on a bit so I wouldn't be stuck right next to him, but you know how fast these 318s are. They're practically a street legal drag car!

I work for a company that makes radar and laser units and I'm also a certified Radar and Laser instructor as well as ex law enforcement. Bottom line, if the cops want you, they've got you. Radar detectors are what we call "cop being sloppy detectors". If the cop leaves the radar on, a detector will catch it. Most cops use instant on and instant off techniques. The units are only on for a split second and powered back down, transmitting nothing to be detected after that instant. The radar will lock in less than a second and they have you. There isnt a detector on the market that can detect a radar unit unless the antenna(s) are being energized...and once again only for a split second or if the officer sloppily leaves it on, then the whole world knows he's there. Sometimes an officer will leave it on just to slow people down. That happens a lot and consider it as a polite warning.
Radar jammers are ILLEGAL in the US. Why? Because they are interfering with a radio signal which is regulated by the FCC. I have had a chance to try out several confiscated jammers just because I'm in the business. Only one worked and it was being used on a early 1970's radar under perfect lab conditions and knowing the exact frequency (measured down to the .000 before hand) and calibrated to that radar unit. It would not work on another identical radar.
Lasers are incredible. Once again, instant on and instant off. They fire a pinpoint beam. If your detector goes off it's because the laser hit your detector directly. That's why officers shoot for the license plates, grille, bumper. If your laser detector goes off, we jokingly call that an "early pullover indicator". If your detector goes off and you werent pulled over a few things just happened: they didnt want you and you just accidentally crossed the beam in front of the intended target and by chance it hit your detector. Granted that sounds like a remote chance but I've seen it happen a few times. Lasers arent broadcasting a radio frequency like radars do and so there really isnt anything for the detector to lock on to. What the detector manufactures dont tell you, or in some cases out and out lie about, is the fact that they only detect a direct shot to the detector, not to the vehicle the detector is installed in. There is a person who works for my company that just left one of the prominant detector manufacturers listed in this thread as a favorite. The truths, or half-truths, came out quickly about the techniques they use to manufacture their units and how they test them. Law enforcement doesnt go after these companies simply because people feel invincible with the semi-placibo effect given by the detectors...and agencies make money due to the ticket revenue from the "protected" consumers. Sad but true.
The moral of the story is just slow down. Keep it to 5 over and you are fine. People arent impressed by those who speed. If your car is that hot, show me on the track: a place designed to see if your car and your skills are what you say they are. Besides, my wife and kids may be on that highway that you are trying to kill yourself on and might get killed as well.

Since I have a unique, close to the matter perspective on the subject I thought I would "un-lurk" for a moment. My comments are not directed at ANYBODY. There are so many misconceptions out there that the truths are hard to come by and a lot of the things that are presented as fact are only based on what is seen, which can be very misleading in regards to this particular subject. Let me point out, I totally understand why each of you believes the way you do about radar, laser and detectors. And it's simply because it is impossible for the consumer to know exactly what the officer is doing when your detector goes off or if he actually focused on you when you zipped by at 20 over. No way for you to tell at all.
I hope this was helpful for someone. Please be safe.

All of that being said, wish me luck as I'm buying my first e30 tomorrow.

good call telling me how I'm an idiot for educating you on pure facts. Jammers = don't work, and illegal even if they did work. I'm sorry you're dumb. BTW, if you're doing 70, in a 50, that a cop patrols daily, he's going to give you a ticket for speeding. So even if you magically went undetected, he'll pace you, pace you based on traffic surrounding you, or claim he paced you or radar/lasered you, because he knows, and when he pulls you over, you know you were speeding. When asked how fast you were going, just tell them, because if they don't already know, they usually guess higher, then work down from there.

But you know everything, and I'm just sooo stupid. Have fun getting a ticket with your clearly superior knowledge of the way the world and law enforcement works.OY u suck at life as always Seattle.

so you speed up and slow down every 1.25 miles?

You don't want it to turn off the rear lights as well, because it's illegal to drive at night with no rear lights. The reason people want to just have their brake lights go out is so that when an officer sees you as you're slamming on the brakes, they don't see that you are on the brakes. It takes the attention away from your car.

well since instructors tell students its LEGAL to seed when passing and passing only.. in that case, if your doing 70 in a 50, be in the fast lane and make sure you have a visual on whats up ahead and make sure theres a car to pass.

testimony. i was driving 80 in a 60 and got pulled over. he started telling me he was goin to give me a ticket so i told him i was PASSING and he told me "well next time dont be so wreckless by doing 80, in that case i can let you go with a warning."

                                radars and jammers = fail!

that shit is stupid and by the time a laser detector goes off, the cop has you. just learn patients and show some concern for the other people on the road. speed limits arent there just to slow you dwn, but they serve a safety purpose.

lol im too yung to try to preach so lemme cut tha bullshit. basicly dont be a speedin douche and if u do go over, be sensible about it.
