July '04 Roundel: Yoko AVS ES100 article

My copy arrived in the mail yesterday. The author spent the last two years running two sets of Yoko's AVS ES100.....one set on 14" basketweaves and the other on 17" Borbet Type Cs.....and now he's written a long term report about his experiences with these tires. His car is a '91 318is with mostly suspension mods and the car sees some track duty from time to time.

Up until now I had heard mixed opinions on these tires, but having read this article I have a better "picture" of the ES 100 and I may give it consideration the next time my car needs tires.....which isn't too far from now.

An informative read for anyone looking into some new tires.

I've got them on my car and love them so far. It kinda sucks that they wear out so quickly but those 15,000 miles are a blast

That's two springs/summers for me, maybe two and a half. Most of my miles are fall/winter during school.

I've got a set of all-seasons on my other car I'll run fall and winter.

You've gotta expect that with any summer/performance tire. If you're getting 40k out of them, they're either A) not "real" summer tires and have a hard compound or B) you shouldn't be running summer tires, cuz you drive like a grandma.

tirerack just did another review of them. And bridgestone re750s better them again, and with better tread life.

but I did like the ES100s i had. very sticky, very nice.

I've been running them daily on my M3, which I drive fairly hard for almost a year now and I love them. I will for sure get them again next time.

If I were to get 15K miles out of a set of Yoko AVS ES100s I would be very pleased. In the past I've run Sumitomo HTRZ II (two sets on 16s) and I was lucky to get 10K miles out of a set. That's just an expected consequence/compromise when you run hi-performance tires.
