I've driven all the 1 series, minus the hatch. And to be honest, the 135i is awesome. I drove a 128 convertible and holy crap its cheap and way too expensive. the 135 coupe and 128 convertible are almost the same price. The soft-tops are way to "light" and dont seem to have much weight behind them. You feel like you are all over the place on the highway and you can definitely feel how small of a car it is. Doesn't help its a convertible either.

The 1 series vert is a great looking car. With 18" wheels it loses that "girly"look. As a matter of fact, the 1 series line looks a lot like a direct descendant of the e30 coupe and convertible.

I know that BMW markets itself as a premium brand, and the new 1 series was to offer a new entry level model - clearly geared towards a younger buying crowd and the brand enthusiast base as well. However, the cheapest one you can get (the 128i coupe) without going nuts with the options list puts you just shy of $30K (before dealer mark up).....the 'vert and the 135i models just go up from there. The true entry level BMW offered today is the Mini Coopers and those range from $20K-$25K depending on the model and how you spec it out. I know BMW does it this way for a reason: to offer incremental cost entry points for specific models ranges that will keep customers coming back to buy their products as their needs/wants change with time.

I sure wish they would offer the 1 series hatch here - and offer it in two distinctive models: the 3-door hatch with the buzzy twin-cam petrol 2.0L four banger and the 5-door with a 2.0L diesel for the economy minded....and price them around the same as the Cooper S.
