Yay! Wife wants an E30!

Kish's iX is nice, and I would love to get it for my wife, but here's the sitch (I've taken the advice of board members and thought this through a little more):

And, yes, i totally agree. E30's are nice cars, but i have loved the reliability of all my Honda's. I can tell exactly what is wrong with it without getting my hands too dirty and fixing them is easier.

I'm sure it'll be like that with my E30 after i get to know her a little more.

So, what are you thinking? 2000 Civic sedan?

if she want's an E30 it sound slike she wants something a little on the fun side... also, crash test ratings and airbags galore aside... I freaking LOATHE our 05 civic 4door every bit as much as the 05 civic 2 door we had before it that my girlfriend's mom wrecked. By the way, she got hit in the rear right quarter panel by a puny dodge neon coming around a corner doing about 50... so I guess she got L bone.. and it fucking crushed the civic... yeah it's supposed to crumple you might say, but the not just the impact point. the poor civic and her mom got tossed over a curb (thank god the pos didn't roll over), the tranny was basically sideways under the car, the air bag didn't deploy, even though the dash managed to crack... and it broke her mom's ribs and messed her up prety bad physically in general, she was hurting for about 6 months after it, and she isn't elderly or anything like that. And the wreck would have been entirely avoided if she had had more power to accelerate out of the speeding cars way as it cleared the corner it was coming around. Mind you she sustained that much impact in the seat furthest from the impact point. Nevermind just from a performance stand point it feeling like everytime you push the gas pedal it drains your soul (yeah how the fuck did you think it got 40mpg? it runs on souls) they are dangerously slow. They can barely stay out of their own way. For god sake please at least get a V6 accord lol. Also you might want to consider Suzuki's. they are producing great faimily/commuter cars.

On the otherhand, if you just stuck with the E30 it would hold value better and be a wiser investment, is a more solid car, and is incredibly simple to DIY 90% of the work. Not sure why everyone is saying honda's are easier to work on. Anything 2000 and up is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to fix on your own, and become less and less reliable high mileage.

You could always buy an e36 or something for about 8k in pretty good condition, and those are way safer than any toyota or honda.

I don't know much about E36's. How are they in terms of reliability and cost-to-own? Gas mileage? I am open to this option :-)

So, what are you thinking? 2000 Civic sedan?

Maybe something newer, possibly the new Civic body style. IDK at the moment. It's dependant on how much we can get for the MB.

My wife had an '89 325i for a while, she loved it. We got rid of it because it needed too much work and wasn't fully reliable, but mainly because it was just really hard to get kids in and out of. She's always said that if we could find a touring, she'd want to buy it. Everytime she rides in my car, she always says "I loved driving my E30".

My many years of working in the insurance world have taught me to things. Don't buy an american full size pick up because the cabs do not hold up at all in a rollover. And not to buy a cheap japanese car cause they crush like tin cans. Honda more so then toyota's. If you want her to be safe put her in a m50 powered e34 that has had recent head work. Cheap, mechanically reliable, and safe. my

On a side note mk4 and up vw's are built like bricks.

Thanks for sharing that - aside from kellie, I don't know any other women that dig E30's. Good to know your wife liked her car. But, your experience was bittersweet due to the reliability issues... my fears realized.

That would be cool. Two issues:

• She can't drive stick (youngsters: please spare the high school commentary). However, this isn't a deal breaker - I feel everyone, including my wife, should know how to drive stick, so I would teach her.
• We don't have $3K in hand.

An E34 Touring would be cool, but then we are back to cost per mile... this is where the Civic and Corolla shine.

Bummer, I thought I had found you the perfect car. :( Oh well...

Have you considered a Suby? (Here I go again with the Subaru stuff.) My first car, now my sister's car, was an automatic 2002 2.5 RS. It's been super reliable, it's safe, it's fun to drive, and you can get 'em for a pretty good price. It's probably comparable to a Civic or Corolla in the gas mileage department too...maybe a little bit less MPG because it's AWD, but it's great in the rain!

I might catch some shit for this, but I'd look into a '06-'08 Hyundai Sonata. Nearly all the reviews I've read have them coming out on top of the Camry and Accord, plus the 100k warranty is a nice bonus.

stay away from e36.. not too reliable in my experience. personally, I would not put my wife in anything older than a MY 2000 due to reliability/safety issues. I can drive 20+ yr cars all day long though :) In your price/requirements range a Suby might be just the ticket.

You have not met mine, she LOVES her '89 325i. I put a set of MOMO I.D.E.A.s on it, pretty damn straight Zinno car...she got rid of a POS '03 Malibu, and absolutely loves her car.
