Is it just me, or is running your tank that empty not a good idea? Seems like and nasty old shit in there will be more likely to cause some cloggage if you run it that low. I rarely let any of my vehicles get below 1/4 tank.

    I could be mistaken though.

Mine will come on if I let it run low on gas which I avoid doing as it's not good for the fuel pump. But usually my OBC will display about 30 miles remaining to go on the amount of gas I have in the tank when the light comes on, so about 1.33 gallons remaining.

+1 I have always heard this. Plus that fuel is also coolant for the pump, you dont want it to get that low if you can avoid it.

Yep. The fuel cools the pump, and heat will shorten the lifespan, so I try not to let it run low on gas.

My Fuel Pump was replaced about 40k ago by the PO

Crud in the tank being picked up when the tank is low?

            Old school bullshit.

The pickup tube is at the bottom of the tank. How is it gonna change?

If you let your tank be empty on a regular basis you will get more rust and crud, but only because there is no fuel...and whatever crud is there will be picked up the same whether full or empty.

Yeah, on my '87 325is the light comes on with about 50 miles to go. The GFs '89 325i does not seem to have a working light. She panics at 1/4 tank, though.

I wouldn't go on empty offen. the fuel helps cool the fuel pump down and I've heard thats a good way to blow a pump is to run on empty offen

that's how you end up with old nasty shit - never running it down. I've always driven right to the light - one time I went like 65 miles on it (I think I had 1/3 of a gallon left).

it's a RESERVE light, not an empty light. it's to let you know that you only have ~2 gallons of fuel left.

pull the level sensor out of your tank. If it does not come on when you turn the key you need a new bulb, cluster, or sending unit.
