SAE 90 or GL-5 is what the Bentley manual says.
But it also says you are only supposed to use the BMW specially formulated stuff as well.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

Or get a good used one, they're all over hell.
Probably wont quiet down much though, 75 or 80 d mounts will rattle your skull even if it was a brand new e30

diff whine is usually at hwy speeds and doesn't really make the car vibrate.. just noisey. possible that it's just the poly mounts. I had some on my 88 325is tranny that i HATED. Tell us more about how the noise comes about and when it started and we'll know more. I doubt your diff is toast.
