There is a "diff whine" kinda sound at basically all speeds on or off the throttle, maybe its the tranny? Or rear wheel bearings?

The vibration, before the engine and tranny mounts, would come on around 2200 RPM or in 2nd gear get more intense towards 3k and then go away past 3k. Same thing in third gear.

The tech assures me aligned the driveshaft correctly (he owns a '92 325i) and said the U-joints and half-shafts all look good. Is there a chance maybe just one of the wheel weights came off one of the rear wheels?

Thing is now with 75D engine and tranny mounts, you can't really feel the vibration at all anymore because there is so much increased NVH in the car.

I don't really want to just start throwing parts at it.

That's what the shop manager said, he is my girlfriends mom's husband, so I don't think he is trying to fuck me over or get me to spend money on something I don't need.

But why would that make the car vibrate like that? And only in 2 gears in the lower RPMs?

its either a ds out of phase , misalignment of driveshaft (unlikely on an e30)
or bad center bearing or guibo. it sounds like someone did the work for you. if it were me id pull the driveshaft and have it checked for balance and phase. rather than just throw money at it. id be willing to bet its out of phase a notch if all that other shit is new

^Yes, I did have someone do the work for me. Moving and OT at the job has left me with little free time for fun stuff like working on the car.

I don't need a rebuild, I think. But there is a noisy bearing that howls on the highway (so that a phone conversation is near impossible), and still can be heard putting around town. How much would it be to just replace a bearing?

It wasn't a big enough deal to rush out and fix... esp. since i had a 3.73 to put in. I'd like to sell the 4.10 lying around but not in such condition... although some diff shop didn't have an issue selling it to me...

You can get a rebuild kit from DiffsOnline, and like vendors, to completely rebuild your diff. From bearings, to seals, to shims and clutches. It's like 500 bucks or something, but it is COMPLETE. If somebody wants to rebuild their diff, I would go that route.

You could also buy a kazz for like $700 iirc. Bimmerworld also sells upgraded clutch packs.

Interesting that this thread was bumped.

The terrible whine? Not the diff, but the input shaft bearing on the tranny. I have a feeling the dipshit mechanic didn't the driveshaft back together in phase after the guibo/CSB replacement.

Oh well, already have a rebuilt driveshaft and 4.10 diff to throw in it. Now to find a good 5-spd.
