Porsche ITB + M20 What do you think? SOLEX 40PI
Well I have been hiding these for years and finally picked them up. Now I wonder if they are a good size for the M20? Well let me know what you think. It says SOLEX 40pi and of course Made In Germany

I also have the original air intake,

those are downdraft carbs, so they would probally take a good bit of work to get working on a EFI m20

I think that those carbs would look good on a Corvair .

i hope you didn't pay much for them. the Weber's are worth a lot more to some one into Porsche's performance wise. the solexes may be worth something to a restoration person.

are the throttle shafts tight? (can you wiggle them back and forth?)
if so they are pretty much junk, re-bushing them is expensive!

have they ever been on fire? (the solexes were prone to backfiring and catching fire)
if so they are junk, probably depending on how bad it was, lots of black inside the carb that doesn't clean up easily = junk

is there water damage? (crusty white stuff in the carb throat or fuel bowls)
                  usually they are junk then

lastly they are down draft carbs so you would have to fab a long intake that would run from the head to the carbs and keep them vertical. they will not run if placed horizontal.

the orginal air cleaner might be worth something to a resto guy along with the intake manifolds, so don't toss them

Buy the Dbilas adapter plate that is machined for the injectors. See what you can fab up. If you have the time and dont mind the effort, it would be a cool project.

Der affe thank you for the info I was looking for and I think im going to try and sell them now.

I found them in an attic when I was cleaning it out to sell. I found other stuff to it was crazy like $1200 in porsche magazines :eeek:

Why the hell would you want to take a well fuel-managed motor and downgrade it to crappy Solex carbs? Making an M20 run on carbs would take a large amount of work and in the end the benefit would be very small, even if you had the latest and greatest Weber sidedrafts. Even then, the performance vs. headache ratio would negate most of the effort and the motor would lose quite a bit of efficiency so it would only really make sense on the track.

These guys are haters. This will completely work. Bolt them on however you can. Use adaptor plates if need be. Open up the carbs and drill all of the jets out. They are made for a smaller engine. Carbs generally like higher fuel pressure so go find a 150 LB fuel pump and splice it in. Advance your cam like 5 or 6 teeth (7 if you want alot of power) then take it to the track.

                              try selling it here:

and try to find your local chapter too. they might have a swap meet in your area.

it would prob help you sell them if you did a through clean up on them. if you are mechanically inclined, completely disassemble them and carb spray them down, then re assemble them. it will give you a better idea of the condition of them, so you can tell the seller.

it is up to your discretion, but if they are clean, have good throttle shaft bushings and have no fire or water damage make sure that you tell the buyer that they are AS IS! you do not have a Porsche to tell him if they work or not, but they are good clean carbs.

just a little insight as i have sold a lot of used carbs to people, if you can't back up that they work, you sell them cheaper (let the price reflect that). that way if they don't work, you are at your own discretion as to a refund, be it partial or what ever. they are hard to tune, and they will not just bolt on and run on a Porsche. if they don't work and the buyer comes back to you, make sure it has been looked at by a prof shop and diag'ed as bad.

it sounds dickish, but i have been through it with Weber's, dellortos, and solexes. i have had the buyer bring then to me on a car and tuned them properly, they just didn't know what they are doing, proving that they were good!

BTW: if you disassemble them and clean them, turn the idle screws in all the way them back them out 2 1/2 turns. that is your base starting point. and be careful when removing the main jet/air jet stacks, if they stick, soak them in freeze off or similar to free them up. they are brass and will break off pretty easily if you torque on them hard
