Seems like the owner was just as confused as what to name the car given the confusion that the engine bay is.

However, after looking closer at the pic I see the white oil filter perpendicular to the block which means it doesn't have the 325i oil filter head for the oil cooler. If it is an i engine then they would have to had eliminated the oil cooler setup...which is not likely. There is also a funky hose (vaccuum?) going over the intake boot. Ok, I'll guess it's a 86-87 325/e/eS w/i intake and Motronic 1.1/1.3.

Bingo.. It has an eta block. The only m20 I have ever seen that has the oil filter in that location has been an eta, because they didnt have the oil cooler.

Has anyone actually got it right? Or does anyone actually know what it is. My money is on the classic 2.7i conversion. As for the car, it is probably an 87 may or may not be iS, but the guy 'might' have known what he was doing by putting the IE badges on it, trying to show that he did the conversion. I know we have no life, I was into e30s ever since dad bought mine new in 86.

denisbmwm5 is the closest one to the car. This whole topic started in a conversation between me and him about what engine that car had. It's in an auction lot and he was thinking of picking it up for a parts car. He went to that lot in person, although I'm not sure if he looked in that car.
