George, the first early variant of the M20 was also used in the E21 323i, it was the only 6 cylinder E21.

BMW fitted an S14 in an E36 racecar before but that wasn't a production model. It was either an S14 or S42, not sure which. So, yeah the S14 was E30 specific...E30 M3 and Italian 320iS.
That was the s42 that was in the e36 race cars.

Technically, the s14 was made FOR the e30 m3. Seeing as how its a modified s38. The motor and car were purely there for homologation. = fuh raze! :)

                    s50

As time went on, the factory developed the car each year, making it faster, more comfortable, and capable of handling at higher speeds.
You don’t want this. You want the trickiest, most dangerous, oldest model you can find. Only then can you prove to the world that you’re a man.

The MZcars used S52 i think because they were after 1996

                          S65 B40. But technically it is used in the E90 M3, the E92 M3, and the E93 M3.

The M41D17 (BMW's first diesel motor) was only used in the E36 318tds, although it was very, very loosely based off of the M51D25 (diesel M50).

Although based off of the M50, the S50 was only used in the E36 M3 coupe/sedan.

The M15 (2002tii motor) and the M31 (2002 turbo) motors were only used in the 2002tii and the 2002 turbo, respectively. However, both motors were based off of the M10.

Great question George, I don't think there is a single motor that isn't based off of a previous motor in only one car.

I am pretty sure they offered the 4 cyl diesel in the 5 series in Europe.
